programme on the material you hand in. In front of room HB05.130 (EWI–
building, Mekelweg 4, 5th floor) boxes are placed in which you can put your
material.

• Bonus Exercise 1:
Two homogeneous rods have the same cross section, specific heat c,
and density ρ but different heat conductivities κ1 and κ2 and lengths
L1 and L2 . Let kj = κj /cρ be their diffusion constants. They are
welded together so that the temperature u and the heat flux κux at
the weld are continuous. The left–hand rod has its left end maintained
at temperature T1 . The right–hand rod has its right end maintained
at temperature T2 degrees.

a) Find the equilibrium temperature distribution in the composite

rod.
b) Sketch it as a function of x in case k1 = 1, k2 = 4, L1 = 1, L2 = 1,
T1 = 18 and T2 = 5.
c) At t = 0 the temperature u1 (x, 0) = 0 for 0 < x < 1 and
u2 (x, 0) = 0 for 1 < x < 2. Determine u1 (x, t) and u2 (x, t).
d) (USE MAPLE/MATLAB/...) Next consider k1 = 2, k2 = 1,
L1 = 3, L2 = 2, T1 = 0 and T2 = 10. Determine u1 (x, t) and
u2 (x, t) when at t = 0 the temperature u1 (x, 0) in the left–hand
rod is zero for 0 < x < 3 and in the right–hand rod u2 (x, 0) = 0
for 3 < x < 5.
