Why NCERT Books are important for

NEET

C
hoosing effective study material, doing routine studies and maintaining positive
approach are vital elements to score good marks in a medical entrance exam.
With abundant study materials available in the market, students often waste
their time deciding the right options. Many of them end up choosing the wrong
study materials.

Experts suggest that medical aspirants, while making their preparation plan, must pick
NCERT Books of classes XI and XII as they focus on fundamentals and help candidates
with basic concepts. As a part of a NEET Preparation series, we bring to you ‘Why NCERT
books are important for NEET?’

Check below the top four benefits of studying NCERT books if you want to ace NEET
with a good score:

Simple language:
NCERT books are written in a simple language which is easy to understand. Also, these
books are lucid and direct in their approach which makes it easier for students to under-
stand the technical aspects of topics like kinetics or energy. Emphasising on the importance
of these books, Khushi Tiwari, AIR 2, AIPMT 2015 shares that, “I have found NCERT
books to be very simple and helpful, especially in Biology and Physics subjects. Also, I found
them easy in comprehending concepts as compared to other books. I used to read these
books regularly along with other study materials.”

Strong basics and fundamentals:

NCERT books cover the basics and fundamentals on all topics of Physics, Chemistry and
Biology.Tejaswin Jha, who was the highest scorer of AIPMT in 2014, had revealed that
NCERT books helped in clearing his concepts on multiple topics. “NCERT is the best way
to clear your basics and concepts in all the three subjects. Once the basics are clear, scoring
high in AIPMT becomes easier,” he says. Another benefit is that once the student clears
her concepts through the NCERT books, it would become easier for her to attempt practice
tests and refer to other study materials on NEET.

As Tejaswin puts it, “One must study NCERT books seriously along with other reference
materials to score good marks in the entrance exam.”

Diagram-based questions
NCERT books on Biology comprise of diagram based questions which helps students in
understanding the subject and be in sync with the pattern of the exam. There are a total
90 questions in Biology, many of which are diagram based. Hence, NCERT books come in
handy when preparing for these types of questions. Further, NCERT books have lot of flow-
charts to effectively remember biological processes. Sharing their success story, Bathinda
twins, Sahil Bansal and Rahul Bansal, who cracked the AIPMT 2015 with 4th and 6th rank
said, “Diagram based questions of NCERT books have helped us a lot in understanding the
subject easily. We made it a point to complete the topic from NCERT text books. We also
solved past years’ AIPMT question papers and took several mock tests.”

Direct questions from NCERT Books

One of the biggest benefits of studying from NCERT books is that many questions in NEET
are either directly fetched from these books or follow a similar pattern. The best example
here is numerical based questions, which have been heavily influenced by the NCERT syl-
labus in the last few years. In fact, experts and toppers alike recommend aspirants to study

the NCERT books thoroughly. “My plan to complete the NCERT syllabus worked for me
as many questions in the test were similar to that covered in NCERT,” says Parv Mehta,
AIR 7 of AIPMT 2015.

According to coaching experts, every topic of the NEET syllabus is important in the
exam, however, the question papers of the previously held medical entrance examination
comprised a variety of questions from important topics including Mechanics, Heat &
Thermodynamics, Modern Physics and Optics from Physics, Inorganic and Organics from
Chemistry, and Cell Structure, Genetics & Evolution and Plant Physiology from Biology.

T
oppers and experts suggest that aspirants should have clarity in their concepts of
Physics, Chemistry and Biology. They should thoroughly brush and revise the top-
ics. The best way to do this is to take mock tests of the revised chapters. This chap-
ter specific approach helps students in understanding of the type of questions that
can be asked in the entrance exam. Shiv Pratap Raghuwanshi, Functional Head, Medical
Division, Resonance Coaching, says, “Students should stick to the basics. Try to strengthen
fundamentals. They have to memorize few things in different subjects but they should try
to understand and enjoy learning rather than making it a boring exercise.’’

Hard work and clarity on basic concepts of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology subjects are
the success mantra of Aravind Subramanian who secured AIR 3 in AIIMS MBBS 2014.
He says, “I used to take 4 to 5 mock tests a week, which helped me to improve my question
solving speed.”

Plan your study schedule:

A majority of the AIPMT toppers from last year planned their study schedule in such a
way that they learnt and revised the chapter of the board exams and practiced the same for
NEET. This planned approach of learning and revision, simultaneously, helped them pre-
pare for board exam as well as for NEET. Rohit Nathani who topped AIIMS MBBS 2014

with AIR 3 and AIPMT 2014 with AIR 9 says, “My plan was to take one topic at a time and
put in all my effort on it. The idea is to prepare in such a way that you do not have to do it
again for board and AIPMT separately.”

Identify your strengths and weakness:

Experts say that students make mistakes but they must try to avoid it because a difference of
a single mark can hamper your rank in NEET. Shreyasi Manish Shah who scored AIR 4 in
AIPMT 2014 says about her preparation schedule that it was not time specific rather topic
specific. She says, “I devoted a minimum of 7 hours daily for my exam preparation. It was
subject and topic specific, rather than time specific. While preparing I focused on chapters
according to their weightage.”

Hence, the best way to prepare for NEET is target specific planned approach and thorough
study of NCERT Books. Akshay Ganesh Kumar, who held AIR 7 in AIPMT 2014 says, “I
believe that planning is necessary to reach a set goal. My approach was steady and planned
and if it was needed, I would have put some extra hours to be able to finish whatever I had
planned for the day.”

Why mock tests are important?

C
areers360 brings to you this article on ‘How mock tests are important in crack-
ing medical entrances?’ where topers and experts of this top Medical Entrance
Exam will guide you about taking preparation with the help of mock tests.

Mock Tests are generally effective to analyse your preparation before a month
or two of the actual exam. AIPMT Toppers and Exam Experts also advocate for taking
the Mock Tests. Akash Chaudhary, Director, Akash Educational Services says, “Students
should take Mock Tests in order to develop a strong grounding of the concepts and theories.
Mock Tests also help in managing the available time judiciously and recognize the areas
they are lacking in.”

Why Mock Tests?

Mock Tests are the most important method of assessing your preparation level and re-crafting the
preparation strategy of the areas you are lagging behind. Mock Tests also help in familiarizing the
exam pattern, exam taking and time management strategy for the D-day.

Therefore, you must start taking the mock exam to evaluate your preparation level. Rohit Nathani,
AIR 9, AIPMT 2014 says, “Solve every type of question, study all the topics, make your basics strong
and take as many as mock tests to identify and rectify your weak areas.”

Types of NEET mock tests:

Mock Tests can be of different types and levels based on your need and preparation level:
l Full Length Mock Tests: This is a replica of actual AIPMT exam and hence should be taken

very seriously while preparing for AIPMT exam. Full length mock tests cover all the section of
AIPMT exam i.e. Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. It contains a total of 180 questions.
l Sectional Mock Tests: This acts as a great tool, to check the preparation level of each section. It is

advisable by experts, to start taking section tests first and then opt for Full length Mock Tests
l Topic wise Mock Tests: Topic wise Mock Tests are used by aspirants to prepare for the important

and difficult topics to have better understanding of those topics.

What after Mock Tests?

After taking one mock test, it is advisable to take at least 2 to 3 days break to identify your short com-
ings and re-strategizing your preparation accordingly. Students must also analyse the time taken to
solve each question, which portion took the maximum time to solve, which section he/she has found
the easiest and hardest and what is their accuracy level?

Analyse these aspects and try to change the style of attempt in order to achieve the maximum accu-
racy level. It is also recommended to get your mock test analysed by your mentors or seniors

Here are some pointers to be followed after taking the Mock Tests:
1. Analysis: After attempting the Mock Test, it is highly advisable to analyse your performance.
Identify your strengths, weaknesses and total time taken to solve each portion and check whether
your mistakes are a result of lack of focus or concentration or lack of conceptual clarity. Arvind
Subramaniam, AIR 4, AIIMS MBBS 2014 says, ‘’ Mock Tests exercise allowed me to analyse my
weak areas and brought good improvement in my AIPMT preparation. I used to take 3-4 Mock
Tests a week, which also helped me in improving my question solving speed.’’

2. Don’t get swamped by the variation of Mock Test scores: Mock test scores are not the exact
reflection of your preparation level. If you take four mock tests a week, you may score different in

14 www.medicine.careers360.com
How to crack NEET

all the four mock tests. Students must note that the mock tests help in analysing their
performance but the result doesn’t reflect the exact preparation level. This may happen
because while taking the mock tests you may have thought of experimenting with your
strategy or would have been tired or not in a position to concentrate while taking the
Mock Test. Therefore, it is advisable to take each Mock test seriously.

3. Note your weak areas and re-strategize your preparation-If you are making any
mistake in particular section or topic of NEET preparation, you need to rectify it after
identifying the reason for the mistake. At times, thorough study needs to be done of that
particular topic or you can also discuss it with your mentors and friends in order to get
better understanding of the topic. ‘’I have always studied every topic thoroughly and
put in all my efforts on it. The idea was to prepare in such a way that I do not have to
do it again and again. Mock Tests have also played a big role in my success’’, says Rohit
Nathani AIR 9, AIPMT 2014

In the last month preparation days of NEET exam, try to take as many full length mock
tests as possible. Consider it as your final day rehearsal before the D-day. This way you will
not only be prepared with the sections and topics, but you will also sit for 3 hours duration
attempting total of 180 questions, covering all the portion of NEET exam.
