DR. SERVAIS…Mariners manager Scott Servais gave the following updates on players slowed
by injuries today: Nelson Cruz (right quad soreness), Robinson Canó (left hamstring tightness)
and Ichiro (right calf tightness) all took batting practice today…Ichiro may take at bats in minor
league game tomorrow…Ryon Healy (recovering from right hand surgery) is in line-up again today…
Andrew Romine (left shoulder) “much better” hit in the cages today; he may play on Wednesday
(after the off day)…Hisashi Iwakuma (off season surgery) is progressing well but not on mound yet.
HALL YES!...Jeff Idelson, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, is in the
house today…Mariners in the Hall of Fame include Ken Griffey Jr. (the first player to represent
the Mariners on his plaque) and Randy Johnson (who won 130 games with Seattle)…three other
HOFers -- Goose Gossage, Rickey Henderson and Gaylord Perry (who won his 300th game
with the Mariners) – spent part of their careers in Seattle, while Bill Mazeroski coached here, Dick
Williams managed Seattle and Pat Gillick was Seattle’s GM…#EdgarHOF.
#EDGARHOF…legendary Mariners designated hitter Edgar Martinez received 70.4% of the vote
in the Class of 2018 Hall of Fame balloting…it marked Martinez’s highest percentage in his nine
years on the ballot…of the 422 votes cast by voters from the BBWAA, Edgar was included on 297
ballots…among the 28 players who have ever eclipsed 70 percent on the BBWAA ballot without
gaining election that year, all 28 are Hall of Famers…Martinez, who is entering his 4th year, his 3rd
full season, as the Mariners hitting coach, has one year of eligibility remaining on the BBWAA ballot.
VS. THE INDIANS…the Mariners and Indians are facing each other for the second of two match-ups
this spring (lost 2-4 on 2/28 at CLE)…the Mariners went 2-4 against the Indians during the regular
season last year…the two clubs will face each other 7 times during the 2018 season (March 29-April
1 in Seattle and April 26-29 in Cleveland).
OPENING NIGHT VS. CLEVELAND…11 days from today, the Mariners will open the 2018 regular
season vs. the Cleveland Indians on Thursday, March 29 at Safeco Field…it will be the 3rd time in
club history that Seattle has opened the regular season against Cleveland (also: 4/4/94 at CLE and
3/31/98 vs. CLE)…the Mariners are 0-2 against the Indians on Opening Day…on March 31, 1998
vs. Cleveland at the Kingdome, the Mariners belted 4 home runs off Indians starter Charles Nagy, a
Seattle club record for home runs on Opening Day…Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner and
Russ Davis each went yard in that game.
NOT A MINOR ISSUE…today is the first full slate of minor league games…Seattle’s AAA and AA
teams will host the Brewers AAA and AA clubs…Seattle’s two A clubs will travel to Maryvale to take
on the Milwaukee A teams…Seattle only played A games yesterday.
GAME TIME CHANGE…the Mariners Cactus League finale, March 27 at Colorado, will now start at
12:10 p.m.…it was originally slated for a 1:10 p.m. first pitch.
