Problem
Suppose you have the vector (2,1). What angle does it make with the positive x
axis?

Solution
You can just use inverse tangent, and you get
1
tan−1 ( ) = 26.56◦
2

Problem
Say you have the vectors (2,0) and (3,4). Find the length of the vector that
connects the two endpoints.

Solution
You can find the third vector by subtracting. So you get (1,4). The length of this
vector is √

If you have vectors with lengths 7 and 10, what’s the length of the shortest vector
you can make with these two?

If you have a vector of length 10 that makes an angle of 20 with the x axis and a
vector of length 16 that makes an angle of 70 with the x axis. If you add these two
vectors, what is the x component of the resultant?

Two concurrent vectors have lengths 5 and 10 units, and they make an angle of 30
degrees. What is the length of the resultant vector you get by subtracting these
two vectors?

A particle accelerates from rest at a uniform rate of 3m/s 2 for a distance of 200m.
How fast is the particle going at that time? How long did it take for the particle to
reach that velocity?

An airplane accelerates down a runway at 3.20m/s 2 for 32.8 s until is finally lifts
off the ground. Determine the distance traveled before takeoff.

A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly over a time of 5.21 seconds for a
distance of 110 m. Determine the acceleration of the car.

You’re standing on a hill 20m high and you throw a ball at 10m/s at an angle of 30
degrees above the horizontal.

What are the horizontal and vertical components of the initial velocity?

The horizontal component is given by

vi cos(30)

and the vertical component is given by

vi sin(30)

For how long does the ball stay in the air?

What is the total horizontal distance traveled?

What is the highest point reached by the ball?

A soccer ball is kicked horizontally off a 22.0-meter high hill and lands a distance of
35.0 meters from the edge of the hill. Determine the initial horizontal velocity of
the soccer ball.

A ball is kicked at an angle of 35◦ with the ground.

a) What should be the initial velocity of the ball so that it hits a target that is 30
meters away at a height of 1.8 meters?

b) What is the time for the ball to reach the target?

v cos(35) v cos(35)

1.8 = −4.9( )2 + sin(35)( )
v cos(35) cos(35)
