Provide a statement (no more than 300 words) indicating how your project is

underpinned by established learning theory (e.g., social constructivism).

The Social Constructivism Theory is the work of Lev Vygotsky (1978). He thought

that cognitive development was linked to social development, a process that

incorporates “constructivism plus others” equalling to social constructivism (Finger,

2007). “ICT tools that use the concept of scaffolding are based on this model” (Finger,

2007, p.119). Visual technology tools can enhance students learning and

understanding. This has been shown when the students are asked to work in groups

and act out a role-play, and then improve their skills by filming scenes and making it

into an iMovie (Finger, 2007). The use of ICT tools in the classroom guides students

to discover new skills and other ways of completing tasks. For example, each student

had to complete a drawing of the subject matter, and once finished they photographed

the pictures and the other pictures in their group. Once complete they were invited to

make a picture collage of all the photos they had collected (Finger, 2007). Working in

groups, they we able to gain others’ perspectives on the bullying process, therefore

building on their knowledge of the subject. Social constructivism is all about a child’s

social world: their ideas, skills, knowledge and personalities (Finger, 2007). Allowing

children to explore and create their own avatar characters that represent “no bullying”

policy in the classroom helps facilitate communication, social development and

language skills amongst the students by sharing ideas, knowledge and concepts with

their peers. Role-playing with groups of students encourages creativity and cognitive

development, knowing what they are going to act out, working together and

performing. Using the iPad video function to capture their role-play is helpful for the

students to gain further knowledge on what they can improve on, change or what they

did well once they all re-watch the video (Finger, 2007). ICT is a useful way to allow

the children to become creative and access all learning areas.
