Module I Preliminaries (6 Hours)

Scalar and Vector, Cartesian coordinate system, Dot product, Cross product; Vector and scalar fields;
Cylindrical coordinate system, Dot product in Cylindrical and Cartesian coordinate systems; Spherical
coordinate system, Dot product in Spherical and Cartesian coordinate systems.

Module II Electrostatics (10 Hours)

Coulomb’s law, Electric field intensity, Field due to multiple point sources, Field due to continuous
charge, Field due to line charge, Field due to sheet of charge ,Field streamlines; Electric flux density,
Gauss’s law, Application of Gauss’s law, spherical surface, line charge and cylindrical surface;
Divergence theorem, Potential field, Potential gradient, Dipole.

Module III Static Magnetic Field (10 Hours)

Biot – Savart law, Magnetic field due to finite element, Ampere’s circuital law; Curl, Stokes theorem;
Magnetic flux density; Maxwell equations in point form, Integral form of Maxwell equations; Magnetic
potential, Scalar magnetic potential, Vector magnetic potential; Force on a moving charge (Lorentz’s force),
Force on a differential current element, Force between differential current elements; Force and Torque on a
closed circuit.

Module IV Electric and Magnetic Fields in Materials (12 Hours)


Energy density in Electric Field, Current and current density, Current and charge density; Continuity of
current; Conductor- Ohm’s law, Boundary conditions Conductor-Dielectric; Dielectric materials,
Boundary conditions between dielectric materials; Capacitance, Stored energy in capacitance; Poisson and
Laplace equations, Capacitance by Laplace equation; Nature of magnetic materials, Magnetization,
Magnetic boundary conditions, Self and mutual inductance.

Module V Time Varying Electric and Magnetic Fields (10 Hours)

Faraday’s law, Transformer and Motional emf; Displacement Current , Ampere’s Circuital law for time
varying fields; Maxwell equations in Phasor form, Differential and Integral form; Wave propagation in
Free Space, Helmholtz equation, Transverse electric and magnetic field (TEM), Uniform plane wave ;
Pointing vector and power, Average power in lossless and lossy dielectric.

Module VI Electromagnetic Waves (12 Hours)

Wave propagation in dielectric media, Electric and magnetic fields, Loss tangent; Wave propagation in
conductors, wavelength into the conductor, skin effect; Wave polarization, elliptic and circular
polarization; Reflection of uniform plane wave, relation between incident, reflected and transmitted
power; Oblique incidence, TM and TE polarizations, Snell’s law, Reflection and Transmission coefficients
for TM and TE polarizations; Total reflection and total transmission, Critical and Brewster angles.
