High and Low/ Melody

Dates: 2/15/18-2/21/18

Grade: 1st Grade. (9:25-10:05)

Goal: Students will be able to distinguish between high and low pitches and perform solfege
syllables “sol, mi, la” on pitch.

Essential Question: How can you distinguish between high and low sounds through listening,
singing, moving and playing? How can we show a melodic pattern?

Materials:

Warm-up: “Bow wow wow”

• Review song

• Students stand in circle

• Remind students of movements: Students stand in circle and face a partner

• “Bow-wow-wow” Stomp-stomp-stomp

• “Whose dog-art thou?” Point-point-point

• “Little Tommy Tuckers dog” Right arm swing with partner and switch places with
your partner

• “Bow-wow-wow” Stomp-stomp-stomp (Jump and flip to face a new partner)

9:35 Call and Response Solfege Syllables

• Review mi-sol-la through 4-beat call and response patterns with hand signs

9:40 Poison Pattern “So-mi/la-sol-me”


• Students will continue to do call and response, but they should not sing back the
poison pattern when they hear it

• Teach Song by rote using motions for second half of the song

• “Oliver Twist you can’t do this, so what’s the use of trying”

• “and around you go” spin around in a circle

• Have class stand in circle

• Teacher is first Oliver Twist to demonstrate

• Oliver Twist freestyles in the middle of the circle and the class must copy their dance

• Pick someone to be the Oliver Twist

• Have the class compose melody for "Rap A Tap Tap-think of that” using mi, sol, and la

• “Rap A Tap Tap-think of that”

• “Ta-ti ta ta rest — ta ta ta rest” (Show rhythm visual on the board)

• Teacher reads book, and students sing their melody when “Rap A Tap Tap-think of that”
appears.
