Goal: Students will be able to compose and perform in a “STOMP” ensemble.

Essential Question: What are some musical ensembles?

Materials:

STOMP Composition Worksheets Crayons, Boards, Pencils

11:00 “I am slowly going crazy”

• Have the words on the board and explain that it goes forward than backwards

• discuss what they were using to create rhythms and sounds

11:10 Explain STOMP Activity

• You are a performer in STOMP and you have been asked to compose a new rhythm piece for
their new show. You have been asked to find new tone colors through found sounds (aka
garbage / everyday objects). Your team will compose your rhythm piece using a STOMP
graphic organizer. You will perform your piece in front of the class.

11:12 Create Groups: Students will be placed in groups according to who they are sitting near
• Assign each group numbers
• Assign group members roles (pass out cards and explain roles—visual on board)
• Materials Manager
• Gets all the materials for the group and puts away all materials for the group:

• 1 Board

• 1 Pencil

• 1 Pack of Crayons

• 1 Paper
• Time Keeper
• Announces time left to the group

• Ensures the group is using their time well and is on-task


• Presenter
• Introduces their ensemble members, their instruments, and the title of their
composition
• Task Manager
• Checks that everyone in the group is completing all tasks correctly

• Checks that everyone in the group is playing on the appropriate beats

11:20 Pass Out Instruments

• Pull a number popsicle stick from the cup, that group number picks their objects/
instruments first, and continue until all students have their instruments

• Give students time to experiment with the sounds they can make using their “found
sound”

11:25 Students get to work in their groups


Compose (5 Minutes—timer on board)
• Students write their name and instrument on the worksheet, and choose their color

• Explain that they will pick what beats to play on

• Demonstrate a few examples

• It is okay if two people play on the same beat, it is even okay if there is a beat that
no one plays on, but it might not be as interesting if everyone plays on the same
beats

• Students will color in the box on the worksheets of the beats they play on
Work in groups to Practice

• Students practice in their groups, teacher helps each group

• Don’t forget to title your composition!

Class Performances
• Presenter introduces group

• Each groups perform: the order of the performance will be chosen through pulling
popsicle sticks
