Reflections on Observation Task 2: Teaching a Phonics Lesson

1. What program is used in your school to teach phonics?

Actually, there are several programmes they used that involved different
topics such as games, letters, sounds, calculate, numbers, matching, drawing
etc. The programs are ABC, Book Adventure, Kiz Phonics, Mr. Nussbaum,
Zoo etc.

2. How is phonics taught in your school?

In my school, they taught phonics in different ways such as reading story,

sing the song, watch cartoon movie and interduce flashcards beginning with
a specific sound.

3. What was the focus of the lesson?

They focus in \s\ sound, words start with \s\ and learn who to write letter s.

4. Were the learners engaged in the phonics lesson? If they were, select (a); if they
were not, select (b).

a. Describe the different types of active engagement activities

that the teacher used.

b. What could active engagement activities the teacher has used

to help learners b e t t e r understand the lesson?
There are engagement activities that teacher could do for teaching letters better and
more enjoyable. For example, teacher could play “searching game” that mean
request children to run through class to finding anything in the class start with \s\
sound. Furthermore, she could display letters in the boards and children clap their
hand if they see letter \s\ so, here the children will have a deep comprehension of
who letter \s\ look. In addition, she may request children to trace letter s in the air,
so they will have opportunity to practice writing.

5. What types of activities did the children participate in during their independent centers that
reinforced the lesson objective/learning outcome? If they participated in learning centers,
select (a); if they did not, select (b)
a) Describe the different types of learning center activities that
the students did.
My MST prepared different activities that support the LO of letter
\s\ lesson. For example,
- Reading center: children read a story and find letter \s\.
- Design and building center: children write letter \s\ by use
blocks.
- Math center: count letters \s\
- Creativity and draw center: children draw anything that
starts with \s\ sound.

b) Describe two (2) learning center activities that the teacher

could have used to help reinforce the learning outcome.
