Roof drainage gutters in accordance with BS 6367:1983

The method of design assumes that :

a) the gutter slope is not more than 1 in 350
b) the gutter has a uniform cross sectional shape
c) the outlets are large enough to allow the gutter to discharge freely
d) the distance between a stop end and an outlet is less than 50
times the upstream water depth, or the distance between two
outlets is less than 100 times the maximum water depth

Effective area of roof Clause 7.1

Length of roof to drain Lr =6m
Effective width to drain Ew = w1+w2+ABS(h2-h1)/2
= 5+3+ABS(1.2-2.1)/2
= 8.45 m
Effective area to be drained Ae = Ew*Lr
= 8.45*6
= 50.7 m2

Rainfall intensity Clause 5.2

Design rate of rainfall I = 75 mm/h
Rate of run off - Clause 7.2 Qd = Ae*I/3600
= 50.7*75/3600
= 1.06 L/s

Capacity of gutter
Gutter is trapezoidal - see clause 8.5.6

Width of gutter Wg = 500

Design depth of flow upstream yu1 = 5*yg/7
= 5*150/7
= 107.14 mm or
Design depth of flow upstream yu2 = yg-75
= 150-75
= 75 mm whichever is greater
As yu1>yu2 ( 107 > 75 )
Design depth of flow upstream yu = yu1
= 107 mm
Width of sole of gutter Bs = 300 mm
Width corresponding to depth yu Bu = Wg
= 500 mm
Shape factor Sf = Bs/Bu
= 300/500
= 0.6
From Figure 7, for a shape factor of 0.6 the ratio of maximum depth of flow to the critical depth, yu/yc is
Ratio of depths dr = 1.85
Critical depth at downstream end yc = yu/dr
= 107.14/1.85
= 57.92 mm
Surface width at critical depth Bc = Bs+(Wg-Bs)*yc/yu
= 300+(500-300)*57.92/107.14
= 408.11 mm
Cross sectional area Ac = yc*(Bc+Bs)/2
= 57.92*(408.11+300)/2
= 20505.07 mm2
From appendix B.1,
Capacity of gutter Qc = 9.9/105*(Ac3/Bc)0.5
= 9.9/105*((20505.07)3/408.11)0.5
= 14.39 L/s

Long gutters Clause 8.4.3 & Appendix B.4

If the length of the gutter exceeds 50 times its overall depth frictional resistance reduces its capacity

Length of gutter lg =6m

Ratio of length to max depth ldr = lg*1000/yu
= 6*1000/107.14
= 56

As the length of the gutter exceeds 50 times the maximum depth the capacity of the gutter will be reduced by the effects of
friction
Depth of flow at outlet yo = yc
= 57.92 mm
Surface width at outlet Bo = Bc
= 408.11 mm
Area of flow at outlet Ao = Ac
= 20505.07 mm2
Froude number Fo = 10100*(Bo*Qc2/Ao3)0.5
= 10100*(408.11*(14.39)2/(20505.07)3)0.5
=1
Ratio lor = lg*1000/yo
= 6*1000/57.92
= 103.6
From Figure 24 of BS 6367 for Froude number of 1 and lg/yo of 103.6 percentage increase in upstream depth to overcome
friction
Increase required X = 5.16 %
Adjusted upstream design depth yuf = yu*(1+X/100)
= 107.14*(1+5.16/100)
= 112.67 mm
As yuf <= yg gutter should not overflow but the amount of freeboard is reduced to +(yg-yuf) mm under a flow of 14.39 L/s

The capacity, 14.39 exceeds the design flow, 1.06 - gutter is OK

Gutter outlet
Gutter discharge to outlet Qdo = Qd
= 1.06 L/s

Gutter discharges into a box receiver
