Roof drainage gutters in accordance with BS 6367:1983

The method of design assumes that :

a) the gutter slope is not more than 1 in 350
b) the gutter has a uniform cross sectional shape
c) the outlets are large enough to allow the gutter to discharge freely
d) the distance between a stop end and an outlet is less than 50
times the upstream water depth, or the distance between two
outlets is less than 100 times the maximum water depth

Effective area of roof Clause 7.1

Length of roof to drain Lr =6m
Effective width to drain Ew = w+h/2
= 5+2.1/2
= 6.05 m
Effective area to be drained Ae = Ew*Lr
= 6.05*6
= 36.3 m2

Rainfall intensity Clause 5.2

Design rate of rainfall I = 75 mm/h
Rate of run off - Clause 7.2 Qd = Ae*I/3600
= 36.3*75/3600
= 0.76 L/s

Capacity of gutter
Gutter is an eaves gutter and is a true half round gutter; size 115 mm
From Clause 8.4.2
Maximum depth of water upstream yu = Wg/2
= 115/2
= 57.5 mm
Depth of water at downstream end yc = yu*5/9
= 57.5*5/9
= 31.94 mm
From BS 6367 Table 1
Capacity of gutter Qc =Table 6367_1 for 115,1
=1.11 L/s

Long gutters Clause 8.4.3 & Appendix B.4

If the length of the gutter exceeds 50 times its overall depth frictional resistance reduces its capacity

Length of gutter lg =6m

Ratio of length to max depth ldr = lg*1000/yu
= 6*1000/57.5
= 104.35

As the length of the gutter exceeds 50 times the maximum depth the capacity of the gutter will be reduced by the effects of
friction
From Table 2 of BS 6367
Reduction factor redf = 0.92
Reduced capacity of gutter Qc = Qc*redf
= 1.11*0.92
= 1.03 L/s

The capacity, 1.03 exceeds the design flow, 0.76 - gutter is OK

Gutter outlet
Gutter discharge to outlet Qdo = Qd
= 0.76 L/s

Gutter discharges into a circular downpipe

Outlet sizing Appendix B.5.3

From equation (8) the head required above the outlet
y1 = (7500*Qdo/D)(1/1.5)
= (7500*0.76/75)(1/1.5)
= 17.88 mm
From equation (9) the head required above the outlet
y2 = (15000*Qdo/D2)(1/0.5)
= (15000*0.76/(75)2)(1/0.5)
= 4.07 mm
As y1 > y2 the flow is of the weir type
Head at outlet yo = y1
= 17.88 mm

As yo <= yc the gutter will discharge freely - outlet is OK

Design Summary
Gutter is true half round gutter
Size 115 mm
Design flow 0.76 L/s
Capacity of gutter 1.03 L/s
Diam. of outlet pipe 75 mm
