ME Electives (Hydraulics)
Experiment No. 1: Dump Truck

Application:

The operator can raise the body of a dump truck by pushing a lever which
extends a hydraulic cylinder. When the lever is returned to its position, the
cylinder automatically retracts under the weight of the body.

Experiment No. 2: Lifting Machine

Application:

A hydraulic cylinder is to extend a platform at full speed. The platform is

loaded with drums of waste oil. When the operator releases the valve, the
retracting speed must be adjustable.

Experiment No. 3: Loading Doors of a Silo

Application:

Crushed rock is loaded onto a truck from a large storage silo. The operator
must be able to control the flow of the rock by opening and closing the doors on
the loading chute. It must be possible to stop and hold doors in any position.

Experiment No. 4: Loading Platform

Application:

A cylinder must fully extend a platform to a loading area. Heavy engine

blocks are to be unloaded at two positions below the loading platform. To achieve
positive control of the cylinder, the intermediate positions must be hydraulically
held.

Experiment No. 5: Hydraulic Hoist

Application:

A hydraulic cylinder is used to raise and lower work pieces of varying

weight from a roller track to an inspection station. The extend speed will be half
that of the retract speed. Each work- piece must pass the sensor used for the
inspection process at the same speed.

Experiment No. 6: Vertical Drill Press

Application:

The hydraulic cylinder controls the vertical feed of the drill head. The drill
head should feed quickly to the part to be drilled. It should then drill slowly into
the part. The return speed of the drill should be independent of the speed control.
Note: The operator must be able to stop the cylinder in any position.

Experiment No. 7: Hydraulic Sewing Machine

Application:

Material is hydraulically clamped on a sewing machine. To prevent

deformation of the work piece, the pressure must be reduced from 40 to 15 bars.
Other elements in the control must be capable of operating at up to 40 bars, the
system pressure set on the main PRV.

Experiment No. 8: Stamp Machine

Application:

Graphic symbols are embossed on metal foil by a special machine. The foil
proceeds through the machine in coordinated movement. The downward
movement of the stamp must be modified in line with the feed speed. The return
movement must always proceed as a rapid traverse movement. The hydraulic
control for the embossing stamp is to be drawn and constructed. A one-way flow
control valve is to be used to influence the speed. A pressure relief valve is used
to prevent the weight of the stamp pulling the piston rod out of the cylinder.
Changeover from upwards/downwards is affected by 4/2-way valve.

Experiment No. 9: Ferry Loading Ramp

Application:

The loading ramp of a car ferry must be capable of being set to different
heights. The ramp is raised and lowered by a hydraulic cylinder. The motion must
be carried out smoothly and at constant speed. A flow control valve is to be used
to adjust the speed. This must be installed in such a way as to prevent excessive
pressures from developing within the system.
