Twenty Philosophical Questions for consideration in Art Education

1. What is art?
Art is an expression of interest in any shape or form. It can be presented in paintings,
drawing, ceramics or sculptures of ideas.

2. What is good art? Bad art?


Good art is anything that is formed with a reason and has a significant meaning behind
it.
Bad art is something that is presented with no significant value to it. It is just there with
no purpose or meaning.

3. What is talent in this area .... How can you tell?


In this area, talent may be described as being able to perform tasks in an artistic
manner, i.e. being able to draw, use one’s own creativity and think outside the box, be
able to form expressions with significance.

4. Can you draw? Why or why not?


I believe I am competent in drawing because I can control my hand movements in the
way I want it to move… light, hard, make shapes … however not like the famous artists .

5. What are three different art forms?


Sculptures, Paintings, Buildings…

6. Who are three artists whose names you remember?


Leonardo Da Vinci, Salvadore Dali, Vincent Van Gough

7. Who are the arts for?


Everyone.. especially for those who are interested in how others express their ideas/
perspective on certain aspects in life… appreciating how colours/ shape work together
to create meaning…

8. Are art and craft the same? How so/or not?


Art is an expression of emotions through paintings, drawings, etc.
Craft is a form of work in which you can touch and feel seen in mouldings or carvings.

9. If visual art, music, dance, drama and media comprise ‘the kla arts’, what is it that
groups them together? Why are they in the curriculum?
Dramatic arts to display students creative expression.

10. Is the teacher’s role the same in the arts as for other learning areas?
I believe so, be more careful with equipment, be more expressive to make it more fun
because the students will be applying there expressions and ideas through the arts.

11. What do you recall from your own school arts experiences? If you can’t
remember … what are common activities you see happening in schools?
Painting, arts and crafts, recreating other artists works with our own twists to it, a scene
from a book.
12. Have you seen any arts lessons taught on [teaching] practice or perhaps taken an
arts lesson yourself? If so what was the purpose of the activity?
To demonstrate how to perform the task, and I guess it shows how the teacher draws or
paints in how own way.

13. Should children be allowed to copy in the arts? Why/why not?


I think they can especially for those who don’t have an idea what to do. But once they
have an idea, then they will learn not to copy others.
It’s recommended not to because it’s a chance for them emulate their creativity and use
their imagination

14. What is creativity and is it important in every arts lesson?


Creativity is thinking outside of the box. It’s important because it allows them to think
outside the box.

15. What do you know about Australian indigenous art forms?


The dreaming – each art form tells a story e.g the dreamtime, meetings, events

16. What is the purpose of colouring in at school?


To be free/ creative/ use one’s imagination in how they want to see things being
coloured. Colour whichever they want – can bend the rules, don’t always conform to
what is right and wrong.
Also.. could be therapeutic in a way – free time, keep mind off things, cool down sessions
after maths or something hard to learn

17. Are the arts important in your everyday activity?


You can see things with more meaning – why is it there? What was the purpose/
meaning for this being here?

18. How have the digital realm and information and communication technologies
impacted on the arts?
People can visualise it more easily (colour faster), fix mistakes easily, doesn’t take a lot
of physical space

19. What is a question about the arts you hope this subject will answer?
 How to disguish between arts and crafts/ dance
 How to considered art when the idea presented is so simple.
 What are art forms

20. Why is it important to think about these questions?


Need to think of kids perspectives when teaching arts, how it influences them beyond
everyday life.
