1. Construction Procedures
General
Prior to the commencement of work submit the materials tests result and get approval. The
calibration of distributer truck shall be carried out for correct application rate. After 2 to 3 weeks of
prime coat laying, clearing the top surface with blower shall be done. The 1st seal coat and aggregate
19 mm shall be laid and rolling with pneumatic tyre roller 2 passes, steel drum roller 1 pass and
pneumatic tyre roller 4 passes at least. Keep 4 weeks based on traffic flow and clearing the surface.
After that, the 2nd seal coat shall be applied and compacting. This surface shall be kept 1 month and
cleaning the surface.

DBST
1. Bituminous material used in surface treatment is CRS-2.
2. The application rate of aggregate and bitumen based on specified in Sub Clause 4.2.2.7.
3. According to the application calculation and other empirical data, the application tares of first
seal and second seal shall be 1 liter/m2 and 2.26 liter/m2 respectively..
4. Final sprayed rate shall be determined from field trials. The actual sprayed rate quantity shall
be according to the Engineer recommendations.
5. The 1st seal coat material shall be sprayed with bitumen distributor at a temperature of 75-85 ̊
C.
6. Tray Test shall be taken.
7. Spread the stone chip 19 mm thick with chipping spreader and use pneumatic tyre roller 2
passes, steel drum roller 1 pass and pneumatic tyre roller 4 passes at least for compaction,
close traffic 24 hours and then open to traffic.
8. After achieved the natural compaction within 4 weeks, then spray the 2nd seal coat (CRS-2)
with at a temperature of 75-85 ̊ C.
9. Immediately, spread the chip stone 12 mm with spreader and continuous compaction and
close the traffic for 24-48 hours.
10. Open to traffic and clean up the site.
2. Traffic management Plan

 Regulate the traffic over the finished work to protect the freshly laid aggregate from
disturbance from its embedded position.
 Provide detour for traffic.

3. CRS 2 burning method

 Bitumen is heated by diesel burner.

 No bituminous material shall be heated above the maximum temperature given in Table
4.1.1(Technical Specification part 4).
 Store at a temperature between 10°C and 80°C.
 Don’t allow emulsion temperatures to exceed 100°C or water boiling point.

4.Material Storage Plan

 Stockpiling of aggregate shall be three locations of near CH: 2+500, CH: 5+100 and
CH:9+800.
 The area of stockpiles shall be clear of all vegetation and debris, graded and drained.
 The bottom of 50mm layer of the aggregate stockpile or any contaminated aggregate shall not
be used in the work.
 Store bitumen drums in near camp site location.
 Store emulsion in drums these shall be stacked on their sides and only in small quantities with
gaps between stack to reduce fire risk.
 The flushings of boilers and distributors shall be led by drainage channels to disposal pits.
3
 Circulate material every two weeks.

5.Spraying of bitumen

For Seal Coat, bituminous material is heated by diesel burner to maximum temperature 95 C ̊ . The
2
bitumen is sprayed at a range of 1.2 L/m with bitumen distributor. The application temperature is
used between a range of 75-85 ̊ C. Control temperature and take the tray test.

6. Spreading of aggregate

Sufficient aggregate shall be in trucks at the work area before any spraying is allowed to
commence. Spread the aggregate within 1-3 minutes of spraying with chipping spreader. Take the
tray tests as per spry run. Hand brooming and hand spotting of areas deficient in aggregate shall be
carried out before rolling.

APPLICATION MATERIALS

Bituminous Material
The bituminous material used was CRS-2 (Cationic Emulsified Bitumen).

1.Application Rate of Aggregate

(a) Application Rate of Aggregate 19 mm

A (kg/sq-m) = 0.8 F x G x H

Where:
F = 1.02, wastage factor for aggregate 19mm and 25mm
G = 2.7 g/cc, Bulk specific gravity (Testing Result)
H = 12.2 mm, average least dimension (Testing Result)
So,
A (kg/sq-m) = 26.87 kg/m2

(b) Application Rate of Aggregate 12 mm

F = 1.07, wastage factor for aggregate 9.5mm and 12mm
G = 2.71 g/cc, Bulk specific gravity (Testing Result)
H = 5.29 mm, average least dimension (Testing Result)
So,
A (kg/sq-m) = 12.27kg/m2

2. (a ) Bitumen Application Rate for Sealing Aggregates 19.00mm

B(Liters/sq-m) ={ (0.4 x H x V x T) +S}/R

Where:
B is the theoritical "Warm" bitumen application rate for each layer
T = 0.70 to 0.75, traffic factor
R = 65.8% or 0.658, Residual bitumen (Test result)
S = 0 or nil for smooth surface, good priming surface
V = (1-J/G), loose void content
J = 1.52g/cc is loose unit weight
G = 2.7 g/cc bulk specific gravity apparent (Testing Results)
So, V = 0.437
So the bitumen application rate for sealing aggregate 19mm is:

B(Liters/sq-m) ={0.4 x 12.2 x 0.432 x 0.7 + 0}/0.658

=2.26 liter/sq-m

6
2(a) Bitument Application Rate for Sealing Aggregates 12.00mm

B(Liters/sq-m) = (0.4 x H x V x T) +S/R

Where:
B is the theoritical "warm" bitumen application rate for each layer
T = 0.70 to 0.75, traffic factor
R = 65.8% or 0.658, Residual bitument (Test result)
S = 0 or nil for smooth surface, good priming surface
V = (1-J/G), loose void content
J = 1.5 g/cc is loose unit weight
G = 2.71 g/cc bulk specific gravity apparent (Testing Results)
So, V = 0.446
And the bitumen application rate for sealing aggregate 12.00mm is

B(Liters/sq-m) = {0.4 x 5.29 x 0.446 x 0.7 + 0}/.658

=1 -Liters/sq-m

Total application rate for both layer ( first layer and second layer) is 3.26 L/m^2
