PNBHS EXPRESSION OF INTEREST PERMISSION SLIP

yLead 2017
Overview

Since 2012 the school has participated in an outstanding leadership

development opportunity which delivers great value in stretching and growing
our young men. The additional long term benefits are that it not only sets them
up for a successful final year at school but also allows them to shape and
think seriously about where they are heading in life. This unique opportunity is
again offered in 2017 for a shortlisted group of Year 12 young men (returning
students in 2018) who through their efforts to date and performance across a
range of areas in the school sees them offered the opportunity. Selection is
competitive - there are only ten places available: a wider group is being
invited to apply for a position on the programme. It is a good opportunity to
gain experience in applying for competitive positions. The conference will
take place during the school holidays from 12 th - 14th Oct (leaving mid-day 11th
Oct and returning late evening 14th Oct). It is a user pays activity – please see
the permission slip. If you are interested in registering your son’s interest in
attending this conference, please complete the attached permission slip. Final
selection will occur when registrations of interest are returned, no later than
Wed 13th September. As there are a limited number of positions available, final
selection will be at the discretion of the Rector. An overview of the conference
is enclosed.

Each young man is required to submit a letter outlining his vision for PNBHS
in 2018 as well as a brief CV (no more than one page – two sides) outlining
his key achievements in Academia, Character Development, Cultural, Sports,
Leadership and Service. An example with format is enclosed for completion.
These need to be submitted to the Leadership Director with the signed
parental Permission Slip/Registration of Interest by Friday 7 th September,
2017.

Any questions please do not hesitate to call or email the Leadership Director,
Mr Paul King at kingp@pnbhs.school.nz Cell 021 528100 Work 06 3545176
Ext 717.

Thank you for your continued support to your young man.

Yours faithfully,

D M Bovey
Rector

I give my approval for ___________________________ (student's name) to
be considered to participate in “Rangitira” The New Zealand Student
Leadership Conference 2017 being held at Rotorua 12 th – 14th October 2017.
The conference is aimed at Year 12 students who will be prepared to step up
and lead their schools in 2018 and aims to “empower future leaders to make a
real difference.” yLead is a non-profit Australian organisation with the bold
mission “to enrich people’s hearts and minds and enable them to live a life
fuelled by passion and driven by purpose.” Your son has been identified as a
possible candidate to attend this conference. Your agreement is required
prior to final selection of candidates to attend. Your son will be accompanied
in this activity by Mr Paul King, the Leadership Director.

I accept that the behavioural rules of Palmerston North Boys' High School will
apply from the time of departure until the students are dismissed on their
return. These rules specifically exclude the consumption of alcohol, smoking
and the taking of any prohibited drugs.

The overall cost per student for the three-day conference including
conference fee, meals, accommodation, transport to and from Rotorua is
$540. The school will be subsidising this cost in 2017 through the
generous donation to the Leadership Programme from an Old Boy - the
cost per student will be $150 and if your son is selected to attend, this
would need to be paid prior to the conference, but not later than Friday
29th September. Please also look ahead to ensure that he has no other
clashing commitments over the period which will preclude him from
attending. It is important that the boys are able to travel to and from the
conference as a group.

I agree that if selected, he should take part in such activities and such
necessary duties as may be required by the staff. I authorise the obtaining of
medical assistance, if in the opinion of the staff such action is necessary.

My vision for PNBHS in 2018 and beyond: How I will make a difference;
the reasons why you would like to be considered for this leadership
development opportunity (no more than 800 words – continue over
page:

My vision for PNBHS for 2018 would be to become more united and more helpful as a
school. A key element of this would be seniors stepping up and taking better care of junior
students who are lost and inexperienced with the way the school works. I would like to see
PNBHS become more of a Family than a Brotherhood. A Brotherhood implies equality and
assumes that every student has the same power, standing and knowledge of the school,
which is not true. Seniors are by nature more experienced than juniors, which is what
everyone is taught in their very first year – there is a hierarchy among both students and
teachers. Junior students at the moments do not look up to or trust seniors, and this needs
to change to make the school a better place for everyone. This is mainly because of the idea
of a Brotherhood, which enforces the idea that everyone is equal. A Family, on the other
hand, has a clear hierarchy that will inspire seniors to take charge and take better care of the
juniors who need their help, dispensing advice and being on better terms with each other. I
feel that this can be achieved better with a Family ideology than with a Brotherhood
ideology, and that better ideas of respect and trust would be reinforced much better.

The way I will make a difference is quite simple – I need to take a leadership role in the
school and convince not just juniors to listen to seniors but also convince seniors to be worth
listening to. At the moment, seniors are not willing to give juniors sound advice or even
acknowledge them at all, and this needs to be addressed to create a Family environment at
PNBHS. I could do this in various ways, from setting an example on my own to giving some
kind of presentation in assembly, and hopefully create the Family environment that will be
instrumental to raising the quality of student life.

Unfortunately, due to the Renaissance Tour, I am unable to attend this opportunity. However,
if I were to attend, several seminars – “Together has Power”, “How to Make People Sit Up
and Listen” and “It’s Cool to be H.O.T.” – look like they could be incredibly useful to creating a
new mentality among PNBHS students of creating a Family. As well as this, various other
lectures seem like they could make me into a better leader moving forward into 2018 and
beyond. I fell that I could really use the valuable information shared at yLead to become a
more effective leader and a better person. Were I able to attend, I feel like I should be
considered because I would be able to synthesize everything thaught to develop myself and
my leadership, and put this knowledge nack into the school to make it a better place for
everyone.
