I. OBJECTIVES
a. To be able construct a hydraulic system based on the application
shown.
b. To design a system that mimics a lifting machine hydraulic set
up.
c. To be familiarized with the components of the hydraulic system.

II. Introduction
A drilling machine, called a drill press, is used to cut holes into or
through metal, wood, or other materials . Drilling machines use a drilling tool
that has cutting edges at its point. This cutting tool is held in the drill press
by a chuck or Morse taper and is rotated and fed into the work at variable
speeds.
Drilling machines may be used to perform other operations. They can
perform countersinking, boring, counterboring, spot facing, reaming, and
tapping. Drill press operators must know how to set up the work, set speed
and feed, and provide for coolant to get an acceptable finished product.
The size or capacity of the drilling machine is usually determined by
the largest piece of stock that can be center-drilled. For instance, a 15-inch
drilling machine can center-drill a 30-inch-diameter piece of stock. Other
ways to determine the size of the drill press are by the largest hole that can
be drilled, the distance between the spindle and column, and the vertical
distance between the worktable and spindle.
III. APPLICATION
The hydraulic cylinder controls the vertical feed of the drill head. The
drill head should feed quickly to the part to be drilled. It should then drill
slowly into the part. The return speed of the drill should be independent of
the speed control.
Note: The operator must be able to stop the cylinder in any position.

IV. FUNCTIONS
1. Differential Cylinder
A differential cylinder acts like a normal cylinder when pulling. If the
cylinder however has to push, the oil from the piston rod side of the
cylinder is not returned to the reservoir, but goes to the bottom side of
the cylinder.
2. 2/2-way hand-lever valve
If the hand lever is activated, then the flow is enabled from P to A.
3. One-way flow control valve
Controls the flow in one direction only. The setting of the One-way
flow control valve is set by means of a rotary knob.
4. 4/3-way hand-lever valve with shutoff position (ii)
In normal position all connections are closed. When manually
actuated the valve is set to crossover or parallel position.
5. Pressure gauge
Measures the amount of pressure exerted by the fluid.
6. Shutoff valve
The shutoff valve can be manually opened or closed.
7. Pressure-relief valve
In normal position the valve is closed. If the opening pressure is
reached at P, T opens. When the pressure drops below the preset level,
the valve closes again.
8. Pump unit
The pump unit supplies a constant volumetric flow. The operating
pressure is limited by the internal pressure relief valve. The pump unit
has two tank connections.

VI. EVALUATION

The experiment was similar to the experiment before this. Another


part was not available so we had to change the circuit diagram without
changing the function.

After assembling the new circuit, we have noticed that you would
need to operate two levers to operate the cylinder. You could also change
the speed of the cylinder using the one-way flow control valve.

VII. CONCLUSION

We therefore conclude that this experiment is useful when there


needs to be a control of the actuating speed without affecting the return
speed. Also, this could be used whenever you need to stop the cylinder at
any given point.
