Profile
My name is Bryan Sak, and I live in Austin, Texas. I am originally from New Orleans,
Louisiana, and moved to Austin after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. I intend to pursue a major
in an environmental field, with a focus on conservation and sustainability, though I have
interest in multiple fields of study. Below is a summary of my experiences throughout my
high school career, and how they have helped to shape my goals and future desires.

Academics
STEPHEN F. AUSTIN HIGH SCHOOL — 2014-PRESENT

I have attended Stephen F. Austin for all four years of my high school career. As a transfer
student, I participate in a program on campus known as the Academy for Global Studies,
referenced below. During my time at SFA, I have had unique and interesting experiences,
whether it be in the classroom, on learning expeditions, or outside of class in group
projects.

ACADEMY FOR GLOBAL STUDIES @ SFA — 2014-PRESENT

The Academy for Global Studies, generally referred to as AGS, is a program within Austin
High School that focuses on global responsibility, globalization and environmental
consciousness. Freshman, sophomore and junior year each have a distinctive focus. — as
freshman we discussed domestic farms and use of sustainable resources, sophomore year
focused on responsible usage of resources and international issues, and junior year we
spent a lot of time discussing Native Americans and domestic relations. AGS has made me
a globally-aware student, prepared to take on challenges of the future.

KEALING MIDDLE SCHOOL, MAGNET PROGRAM — 2011-2014

I attended the Magnet program at Kealing Middle School for three years. The program’s
curriculum was extremely vigorous, often similar to my workload at Austin High School.
Kealing helped me be more prepared for high school, and taught me important skills such
as time management and organization.

Extracurriculars/Activities

NEWSPAPER, NEWS EDITOR, 2017-2018

As News Editor for The Maroon, our school’s print and digital publication, I oversee staff
writers, write and publish content, and work with other editors to accomplish our goals.
This year, we are focusing on broadening our digital presence and boosting print
readership. I have embraced a leadership role and have established positive relationships
with my fellow editors and our advisor in order to make The Maroon something to be truly
proud of.
NEWSPAPER, STAFF WRITER, 2016-2017

During my time as a staff writer, I gained a lot of experience in writing copy, designing and
laying out spreads, and conducting interviews. I was able to build relationships with my
editors and our new advisor, Jena Weber. Producing content as a staff writer helped to
build my portfolio and later take on an editor role.

GARDENING CLUB, MEMBER, 2017-2018

As a member of Gardening Club, I have worked to build and develop Austin High’s
garden, which grows a number of different crops seasonally. This development includes
refurbishing garden beds, clearing weeds and planting crops. Gardening Club has taught
me about domestic crop growth and using the environment to my advantage without
harming it.

YEARBOOK, STAFF MEMBER, 2015-2016

My sophomore year, I was placed in Yearbook and was unable to switch into Newspaper
due to scheduling conflicts. I embraced my role as a staff member for The Comet, and
spent the year learning new skills, such as designing spreads in InDesign and writing copy,
and expanding on others, such as photography. This experience has helped me working
on our school’s other publications and will continue to in the future.

Volunteer Experience
THE ART SCHOOL AT LAGUNA GLORIA, VOLUNTEER, 2014-2015
During my time at the Art School, I worked with instructors to help run daytime art classes
over two summers. Generally working with children ages 5 to 10, volunteering here
helped to build my interest in community service and serving local organizations.

THE THINKERY AUSTIN, VOLUNTEEN, 2014-2015

During my time at The Thinkery, a children’s museum, I completed over fifty hours of
volunteer service, which came in many different forms. I assisted paid staff on the museum
floor, helped design and carry out lesson plans, and helped children learn and have fun in
an educational environment. The Thinkery was an amazing place to volunteer with others
my age, and a valuable experience.

AGS VOLUNTEER SERVICE, 2014-PRESENT

As a student in the Academy for Global Studies, I have performed volunteer service for a
number of different organizations, ranging from local farms in Austin to EARTH University
in Costa Rica to Heifer International in Little Rock, Arkansas. All of these volunteer
opportunities provided me with new knowledge about sustainable use of resources and
being environmentally-conscious.
Work Experience
THUNDERCLOUD SUBS, STAFF, 2017-PRESENT
In June, I began working at a local sandwich shop, Thundercloud Subs. As a staff member,
I prepare sandwiches, engage in customer service, and am responsible for a number of
other duties. I have continued working into the school year, which has helped to reinforce
the importance of having a positive work ethic and efficient time management.
Additionally, I have worked to make our store more environmentally friendly by pushing
for a better recycling system, and potentially a method for composting.
