The photo shows a Plug & Work test. In the
in-house test centers, SMS group automa-

original automation system to be later in-
stalled at the customer’s site including con-
trol cabinets, computers, control desks and
software. Then, prior to commissioning, the
automation system is thoroughly tested by
close-to-reality simulations, and the cus-

early stage. Plug & Work is the name of
SMS group’s innovative proceeding which

The day silos will be refilled as required by the powder stor-

Finally, the carry-over slag plus the slag formed on top
of the ladle during injection will be removed by a de-slag-

frame mounted on the car (HMD 1) or in the fixed ladle tilt-

slag pot placed on a transfer car and parked in the rear of
the enclosure. When the slag pot is full, the car will transfer
it from the building to the slag bay where the slag pots will
be handled by mobile carriers for appropriate disposal. Riccardo Sigoni

TALEX casthouse –
successful start of
operation
The new TALEX extrusion plant in Abu Dhabi operates using its own extrusion
billet. The casthouse, which started operating in February 2016, was built as a
turnkey plant by Hertwich Engineering, a subsidiary of the SMS group.

For more than forty years the industrial zone in Abu Dhabi
has been the country’s fastest-growing economic area. Its
current expansion projects include a new extrusion plant.
The operator of the new plant is Taweelah Aluminium Ex-
trusion company (TALEX) LLC, which was founded in May
2011 as a joint venture between SENAAT Industrial Holding
(formerly Abu Dhabi Basic Industries) and Gulf Extrusions.
The investment follows the trend for the high-performing
smelting industries in the Gulf Region countries to expand
into downstream activities (value added material). In fact,
and not least because of the dynamic building boom, the
Gulf Region has developed to become one of the centers of
worldwide extrusion production.

HIGH-QUALITY PRODUCTS FOR SPECIAL DEMANDS

In the first expansion stage TALEX set up two extrusion
lines and a casthouse for extrusion billets. Besides stan-
dard extrusion applications the new TALEX extrusion plant
will also produce high-grade extruded products for special
requirements in the automobile industry.
For the construction of the entire casthouse complex the
Austrian company Hertwich Engineering was awarded the
contract. After the first expansion stage (now completed)
the annual output of the casthouse will be around 30,000 to
40,000 tons of extrusion billets.
At TALEX an “Ecomelt-PR 80” (melting performance of 4
