Film Critique: “Hotel Rwanda”

Rwandan Genocide was the mass extermination of two different ethnic groups ‘Hutu’
and ‘Tutsi’ in 1994. It is very traumatic for the people in Africa especially in Rwanda. It was the
largest massacre during the Rwandan Civil War which was mostly carried by the terrorist Hutu
militia group, for 100days from April 6 to mid-July. Unfortunately, thousands of moderate Hutus
and at least 500,000 Tutsis died during this genocide. The death of the Rwandan president
Juvenal Habyarimana led to this desperate genocide when his plane was shot down above the
Kogalo airport on the 6th of April in 1994. Because of this the war between the Hutus and Tutsi
became more intense.
In the movie, the lead character Paul Rusesabagina, a Hutu, manages the Hôtel des
Mille Collines and lives a happy life with his Tutsi wife and their three children. Their life is
normal until when Hutu military forces initiate a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Tutsi
minority. Since his wife is a Tutsi, It is hard for him to protect his family. Also he should decide
who will be protected first because his wife is a very kind woman that also wants to protect their
Tutsi neighbors and friends. That is why he decided to go to the hotel with other Tutsi and he
even protected them using his money. He decided to put them in their hotel where they stay
during the genocide.
It is hard for Paul to protect them because they don’t have security. Even though they
thought that finally there will be a peace among the Hutus and Tutsi, and some believe that they
can still change the situation, it become more complicated when one by one losing their alliance
that can help them to escape. It is very important to have the security. Even though there are
good Hutus, there are more Hutus that really want to proceed to the genocide. In the movie, you
can see how the security affects the political economy of the states. The Tutsi only rely on the
help of security from the other countries. They asks not only the security but also other people to
open their minds and hearts to help them to stop the said war. It is also hard for the security to
help because they cannot just intervene because they can also suffer if they do that. It is also
dangerous for them to just attack the Tutsi to help. Just like what the U.N security said, they are
different from peacemakers and they are just peacekeepers.
When it comes to like this situations, It is important to make sure that peace comes
first. Because if a state focus to the development, and other citizen is not agree from the
development that the state wants, it can cause a trouble. We should remember that it is beteer
that we have peaceful country than having a developed country which citizens are not united. I
know that it is impossible for the Philippines to have like this situation, but still we should be
careful since we have still insurgents in our country. I think Philippines is making a good
strategy in attaining peaceful and sustainable development. Even though some of us are not agree
to it, but to think of it, if our government didn’t give want our insurgents want, they will just
push to threat the other citizens of the are they stay in.
I would like to recommend that to avoid this from happening, we should always think
first before to make or do something, especially if we will cause trouble. Our government should
be more open and explain to the citizens what is happening so that they will have knowledge and
the insurgents cant brainwash their mind. We know that it is not easy for them just to stop their
thinking and perspective, so the government should be prepared and must look like strong and
not threaten from them. For our country to maintain stable and avoid war, we should be
responsible on our acts and we should have unity and don’t forget to pray for a peaceful country
because we don’t know until when we have this peaceful country especially nowadays.
