Thermal Regulation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Differentiation
The team will examine thermal effects on chondrogenesis of human mesenchymal stem cells in stiffness
adjustable hydrogel. It requires cell culture, in vitro chondrogenesis, light microscopy, basic mechanical property
measurement of hydrogel, and data analysis.
Tumor cell adhesion in a microfluidic system mimicking real vasculature
The danger of cancer is its metastasis in which cancer cells transfer from their primary locations to a distant
organ/tissue via blood/lymphatic circulations. Cancer cell arrest and adhesion are two critical steps in its
metastasis. The team will coat the surface of the microchannels with a variety of ECM proteins. They will also
perfuse the cancer cells with the red blood cells (RBCs) at various flow rates to simulate the real blood
circulation
Migration of Retinal Cells for Regenerative Therapy

Retinal dysfunction and disease are leading causes of vision loss worldwide. Promising cell replacement
therapies depend upon the migration of transplanted cells to particular anatomic locations to achieve repair.
The team will examine the in vitro migration of neuronal and glial cells from the mammalian retina using
microfluidic devices.
Neural Engagement in Online Education

This summer project aims to objectively measure attentional engagement with learning material directly from
activity generated by the brain and eye movements during instructions. We will test different types of
educational material found online, both good/bad, engaging and interactive. The students will work in teams in
collaboration with research staff.
