Río de Janeiro 2016
The Olympic Games of Rio de Janeiro 2016,3 officially known as the Games of the XXXI
Olympiad, or more commonly as Rio 2016, were an international multi-sport event, held in
the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between 5 and 21 August 2016, although the group stage
of the soccer tournament began on August 3 in the women's branch and on August 4 in the
male branch. The XV Paralympic Games were also held in said city, between September 7
and 18 of the same year.
In this edition of the Olympic Games, 11,551 athletes from 206 national Olympic committees
participated - Kosovo and South Sudan participated for the first time - which competed in 306 events
of 28 sports, 4 including rugby 7 and golf, added to the Olympic program in 2009. The competitions
were held in 33 sports venues in four neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro -Maracaná, Barra da Tijuca,
Deodoro and Copacabana- and in five stadiums located in the cities of São Paulo, Belo Horizonte,
Salvador de Bahía, Brasilia and Manaus.

Seven cities officially submitted to the International Olympic Committee their aspiration to host this
sporting event, but after a first stage of evaluation, the list was reduced to four cities: Chicago, Rio
de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo. Of these, the Brazilian city was elected at the cxxi Session of the IOC,
on October 2, 2009, held in Copenhagen.

The election of Rio marked the first time that the country has been designated as the venue for
the Olympic Games. In addition, it is the first time that an Olympic event has been held in a
Portuguese-speaking country, the first time it takes place in a South American country, the second
in a Latin American country -the first edition was Mexico 1968-, the third time it takes place in the
southern hemisphere - previously were Melbourne 1956 and Sydney 2000 - and the seventh in a
country of the American continent - previously were San Luis 1904, Los Angeles 1932, Mexico 1968,
Montreal 1976, Los Angeles 1984 and Atlanta 1996-. To all this is included the fact that it is the
fourth country that consecutively organizes the Soccer World Cup and the Olympic Games (Mexico
in 1968 and 1970, Germany in 1972 and 1974, and the United States in 1994 and 1996).

The city of Rio de Janeiro was unanimously chosen by the Brazilian Olympic Committee as the
national city aspiring for the XXXI Olympiad on September 1, 2006, initiating a ten-year process until
the Olympic Games.7 The celebration of the Pan-American Games of 2007 put to the test the
organizational capacities of the COB and the city, successfully raffling them and giving new impetus
to the candidacy for the first Olympic Games for South America.

The candidacy of Rio de Janeiro 2016 was based on four concepts: technical excellence, experience,
transformation and support for the Olympic and Paralympic movement. Technical excellence meant
reinforcing aspects such as accommodation, transportation, security and the financial aspect. The
second principle, "Experience", proposed full stadiums and passion for sports. The third,
transformation, spoke of a mixture of social and environmental intervention in the city of Rio, aimed
at the social inclusion of marginalized groups through the Olympic transformation. The last point,
regarding the Olympic and Paralympic movement, promised to promote the Olympism in young
South Americans and volunteering.

The organization of the event was involved in various controversies, such as the political instability
of the country, the presence of the Zika virus and the significant levels of pollution in the Guanabara
Bay. In addition, a doping scandal prevented the participation of 118 Russian athletes in the Games.

The official mascots of the Olympic and Paralympic Games of Rio de Janeiro 2016 were presented
on November 24, 2014: 13 the Olympic mascot, which represents the Brazilian fauna, is a yellow
animal with blue arms with features of mammals such as cats and monkeys. The story created for
these characters states that both were born of the joy of the Brazilian people that emerged when
the International Olympic Committee chose Rio as the Olympic venue. After the presentation, the
organizers conducted a vote to decide the name of the pets. On December 14, it was announced
that the public chose Vinicius (Olympic mascot, in honor of Vinícius de Moraes) and Tom (Paralympic
mascot, in honor of Tom Jobim) as the names of the characters.

Atlanta 1996
The 1996 Atlanta Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXVI Olympiad and informally as
the Centennial Olympic Games12 (in Spanish, Centennial Olympics), were held in Atlanta, United
States, between July 19 and 4 August 1996. 10 318 athletes (6,806 men and 3512 women) from 197
countries participated, competing in 26 sports and 271 specialties.

The United States has organized, in addition to this edition, the Summer Olympics in 1904, 1932 and
1984. These games were held 100 years after the first in the modern era, Athens 1896. Atlanta
became the third American city to celebrate the Summer Olympic Games.

It was used as the official theme song You Can Get, Spanish version of the single "Reach" by Gloria
Estefan, played by herself and accompanied by singers like Roberto Carlos, José Luis Rodríguez, Julio
Iglesias, Jon Secada, Ricky Martin, Carlos Vives, Patricia Sosa, Plácido Domingo and Alejandro
Fernández.

In 1996 100 years of the first Olympic Games of the Modern Era were celebrated and Athens
presented its candidacy to host this Olympiad, most of the opinions and preferences were inclined
to the Athenian candidacy since it would have been the ideal setting to celebrate this centenary in
an environment of humanity and mythology that offered the city as the cradle and world capital of
Olympism whose historical places were also the scenarios in which the world saw them reborn for
the contemporary era in 1896. However, distrust for a lack of punctuality in terms of the
construction of sports facilities and infrastructures as well as the continental rotation system (since
Barcelona, Spain, had already been chosen as host of the 1992 Games), made the International
Olympic Committee decide on the American city in the last rounds of voting, opting for security in
all its senses that had the candidacy of and Atlanta, even though the decision was not exempt from
controversy and severe criticism days after the vote. Athens presented its candidacy again and
organized again the Olympic Games for the second time in 2004.

The number of countries increased after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. The countries that in
Barcelona 1992 participated in the Unified Team would now do so separately. Russia competed as
a separate country for the first time since the 1912 Olympics, and it was the first time that all the
countries that were part of the IOC at that time participated in the Olympics.

The 14 nations that made their Olympic Games debut were Azerbaijan, Burundi, Cape Verde,
Comoros, Dominica, Guinea-Bissau, Nauru, Palestine, Republic of Macedonia, Saint Kitts and Nevis,
Saint Lucia, Sao Tome and Principe, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan

On the other hand, the countries of Armenia, Belarus, Slovakia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,
Moldova, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Uzbekistan are incorporated after their debut in the 1994
Winter Olympics.

Izzy was the mascot of the Atlanta Olympics. Created in 1991 by graphic designer John Ryan, it
was presented to the world at the closing of Barcelona 1992 during the presentation of Atlanta as
the sucerosa city and with the name of "Whatizit" (Name based on the phrase "What is it?" What is
this) and was a kind of blue toad, designed by computer.

The reception of the new mascot was terrible from its presentation, and before the refusal to change
it the organization of the Olympics asked its creator a redesign of the character, applying a more
athletic aptitude and some superfluous changes. In October of 1995 the definitive version was
presented, known like "Izzy", and the mascot was finished. Izzy did not enjoy the same popularity
as Cobi during his Olympic Games, being less promoted by the organization of the event alleging
that the mascot was focused especially "on the children's audience", with the end of the Games
immediately passed into oblivion.

In the athletic category, the Canadian Donovan Bailey won in the 100 meters, setting a new record
in 9.84 seconds. Michael Johnson won in 200 and 400 meters, also establishing a world record in
200 meters. The French athlete Marie-Jose Perec performed a feat similar to that of Johnson in the
women's category. In the long walk the expected duel between Spaniards, Mexicans and Russians
ended in a big surprise when the Ecuadorian marcher Jefferson Perez achieved a gold in the category
of 20 km march becoming the first and only athlete of Ecuador to obtain a gold medal In Olympic
Games, in long jump the athlete Carl Lewis, with 35 years of age, achieved the fourth gold medal in
his history. They beat 2 world records and 12 Olympics.

In basketball there was a complete American domain. The 1996 men's team won gold by beating
Yugoslavia. The Atlanta team tried to emulate the legendary Dream Team that won the gold medal
in Barcelona 1992, with the presence of Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal, Grant Hill, Karl Malone
and John Stockton among other players in the NBA. In the female category, the United States got
the gold in the year prior to the establishment of the WNBA.

In baseball, the Cuban team won the gold medal by defeating Japan, in a significant triumph when
it took place in the United States. The victory in softball was for the United States.

In combat sports, the judo category had a dominance of Asian countries, especially Japan and
South Korea, in the medals table. In fight highlights the gold of Kurt Angle, while in boxing,
Americans and Cubans stood out.
