ASSIGNMENT 1 : SKAA3842 – TRAFFIC ENGINEERING

1. The following data shows the counted flow on a roadway for 7 days. What is the
average and maximum daily flow?
Day Number of Vehicles
Monday 8500
Tuesday 8600
Wednesday 8100
Thursday 8750
Friday 8800
Saturday 6700
Sunday 5550

2. The following table contains two sets of one-week traffic counts data obtained on a
stretch of rural road.
a) Compute the ADT for both datasets.
b) Estimate the AADT for the road section.
Day March 2009 (veh/day) October 2009 (veh/day)
Monday 12500 10300
Tuesday 10500 12000
Wednesday 15200 13000
Thursday 13400 14500
Friday 16000 15200
Saturday 10500 8500
Sunday 8000 10200

3. The following counts were observed on a rural highway. Compute

a) the average hourly volume;
b) the peak volume for a 1-hour period.
Time Traffic Volume
7:00 – 8:00 500
8:00 – 9:00 900
9:00 – 10:00 760
10:00 – 11:00 700
11:00 – 12:00 400
12:00 – 13:00 850
13:00 – 14:00 500
14:00 – 15:00 660
15:00 – 16:00 725
16:00 – 17:00 700
17:00 – 18:00 1100
18:00 – 19:00 750
4. The average traffic flow on a length of highway is 47230 veh/day, which 83% is cars,
2% buses, 5% medium lorries, 7% large trucks and the remaining is taxi. Convert the
hourly flow to passenger car unit.

5. The traffic flow along the roadway in city is 600 veh/hr. It composed of 150
motorcycles, 50 large buses, 40 medium lorries, 60 small vans and the remaining
vehicles is cars and taxis. Convert the flow in veh/hr to pcu/hr.

6. The following table shows the information on journey time and delay along a 6 km
main roadway. Estimate the journey and running speed along this roadway.
Journey time (min) 5.0 5.5 6.0 6.5 7.0 7.5
Delay (min) 0.5 0.8 1.5 2.5 3.1 3.7
Number of vehicles 6 9 17 22 11 4

7. The speeds of five vehicles were measured at the midpoint of a 0.8 km section of a
roadway. The speeds for vehicles 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 were 71, 68, 82, 79 and 74 km/hr.
Assuming all vehicles were travelling at constant speed over this roadway section,
calculate the time-mean-speed and space-mean-speed.

8. What is the time-mean-speed and space-mean-speed for four vehicles which travel 2
km at speeds 40, 50, 60 and 80 km/hr?

9. A section of highway is known to have a free-flow speed of 88.5 km/hr and a capacity
of 3300 veh/hr. In a given hour, 2100 vehicles were counted at a specified point along
this highway section. If the linear speed-density relationship applies, what would you
estimate the speed of these 2100 vehicles to be?

10. A section of highway has the following flow-density relationship:

q = 80 k – 0.4 k2
What is the capacity of the highway section, the speed at capacity, and the density
when the highway is at one-quarter of its capacity?
