Observation Notebook
Next, ask students what they did last night and discuss it with their partner. Then pick up
some students to talk about what they did.
Write on the blackboard: business statement, fix the in-class essay, search for paper, etc.
Discuss with partner how many parts of the essay they should have today.
Work with a group. Ask students to choose a partner. And they will go through one essay
together, besides, they should take notes on one sheet paper, including some errors if any.
After fixing one essay, they should check another one.
Handout materials.
T: Now we start our simple task today. Look at these pictures and then tell me what
topics are for today.
Ok, so what are topics for today?
I don’t say the title; I say the picture here.
Students: Conversation in the restaurant.
T: In the restaurant? Between who and who?
S: Waiters and customers.
T: Yes.
Question: Now I want you to discuss what are the healthy foods? Give some examples.
(Discussing…)
Finish the paper: the first question is the view of the picture; the second question is your
own view.
Read and finish the second materials. And when they finished, they can check with their
partners. (Change partners to discuss again. )
Make sentences with new words “diet” that is picked up from new reading materials.
Give examples to nutritious foods. (Change partners to discuss the last two questions.)
Have a break.
Assign homework and inform students when they should have a test.
In this ESL class, I focused on the structure od the whole class. I want to know how a
teacher design an ESL class. This class was for students who would attend college after
these courses, so writing and editing academic paper are very important to them. And for
foreigner students, it is difficult to write an academic paper, especially words choosing,
grammar, verb tense and so on. It is also a boring part of learning a language. So as an
English teacher, we should make it more acceptable. I just learned this from this class.
In order to achieve the goal of each student accepting all knowledge, how to plan a class
is also a lore. An important dimension of teaching is the specialized thinking skills it
involves. Teaching involves many different kinds of thinking and decision making, and
teachers draw on complex cognitive processes before, during, and after a teaching
experience or episode. One important dimension of teacher thinking involves the
processes that are employed in planning lessons. Thee call upon what has been termed a
teacher’s “pedagogical reasoning skills”. (Richards & Farrell, 2011)
For foreigner students, especially Chinese students, English is a second language, so they
need to practice more to improve their level. In this class, teacher designed all kinds of
discussions to encourage them to do exercises in the class. Besides, teacher also assigned
some homework for her students in order to make sure that they practice enough at home.
And in this class, students were center. Teacher acted as a guide in the class. All errors in
their essays were found by themselves and all answers to the questions teacher gave were
given by students. Teacher did not give a standard answer to them. I think it is a good
way to calculate their creative thinking as well.
In conclusion, this class is learner-centered and this teacher also had a great thinking to
organize a class and make students practice more.
