WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO BE PART OF THE 11TH ANNUAL JCPS COMPUTER

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

In 1999 the IT Community, Greater Louisville, Inc and the Jefferson County Schools worked
together to build a partnership in IT experiences for young people throughout our community. This
partnership has grown each year so that last summer we celebrated not only ten years of service but
our 300th internship and we broke the $1,000,000 mark for wages earned by our high school IT
interns. Our students work in the following areas:
• Computer Repair, Help Desk, and Tech Support
• Computer Programming
• GIS (Computer Aided Mapping)
• Network Administration, Security and Wiring
• Web Design, Graphics and Administration
• Office Skills (Word, Excel, Power Point)

Most students have received both college and high school credit for IT Computer courses in our
School to Career Programs. Many have also earned Industry Certifications such as CompTIA’s A+,
Network+, Security+, Certiport’s IC-3 and Microsoft MOS; and ESRI’s GIS Certificates of
Completion (for ArcView and ArcMap).

The IT Internship provides high-skilled student workers for your organization at an extremely
competitive price. Additionally, many students remain with the same employer after the internship
while they complete their post-secondary education. We do not set hourly rates; however, we
suggest a starting rate at $9.00 per hour for students with industry certifications and less for those
without. The range in 2007 was $6.70 to $14.50. This averages out to an investment of $2500 to
$3500 per full-time intern for a 10-week summer.

The program has been positively received and recognized over the years by a wide array of articles
in the C-J, Herald-Leader, Business First (1/18/08), CompTIA’s Website, and this month’s
EDTECH Magazine (p.9) http://www.edtechmag.com/k12/issues/february-march-2008/learning-
by-leaving.html

IT Really Works!
For ten years the Jefferson County Schools and area businesses have been enjoying a mutually
beneficial employment program called the IT Internship. Last summer year we celebrated not only
ten years, but our 300th intern and one millionth dollar earned! In addition, businesses from
downtown to the suburbs, from computer rooms to parks, have all been able to take advantage of
low-cost, high-energy, hi-tech talent.

The students work in the areas of Computer Repair, Programming, Helpdesk, GIS-mapping,
Network administration and Wiring, Web-design, Graphics, and computer office skills. Most of the
workers have earned both college and high school credit for IT computer courses offered by the
Technology Departments in their schools. Many have also earned industry certifications like IC-3,
A+, Network+ and Security+.

Their hourly rates are set by each company but generally range between $8 and $10 per hour. This
adds up to earnings between $2500 and $3200 for the 10-week summer internship (Part-time
employment is also an option for many of the participants). Generally, about 50% of the workers
stay on part time after the internship at the request of the hosting company. In the fall students
bring back their skills and experiences to their classrooms and have higher expectations as most
move toward college settings.

If you are interested in your company being involved in this great program, contact Scott Horan at
the JCPS School to Career Office (485-3320), cell (619-3132) or via email at
scott.horan@jefferson.kyschools.us . You may also contact Linda Neal at GLI (625-0089) or via
email at lneal@greaterlouisville.com .

Internship interviews will be held on May 5th (the Tuesday after Derby) from 3:00 – 5:00pm.

This year as you approach the vacation shortages of summer and the fiscal limitations of our
current economic downturn, think IT Interns from your Jefferson County Public Schools.
It’s a great program and IT works!
