500,000 LANGUAGES HAVE DISAPPEARED

A About half a million languages have existed since the first humans appeared 200,000 years
ago. However, many of these languages have simply disappeared over the centuries. Linguists
estimate that there are 7,000 languages in the world today but many of them are under threat of
disappearing completely.
B Only about 20 of these languages are recognised by people in general. The vast majority of the
remaining languages are spoken by small tribes. One example is Papua New Guinea where
you can find over 800 languages. You can find a new language spoken every three or four
kilometres. One explanation for this is that these small groups grow their own food and
survive independently. They use language to mark out their territories and to distinguish
themselves from other groups.
C It is interesting to consider why some languages survive while others die out. It is not just a
matter of how difficult the language is to learn. English, for example, is well known for its
difficult spelling and pronunciation. However, the survival of a language depends on how
successful the society that uses it is.
D There are no languages superior to others. There are just lucky languages, and the luckiest of
them all is English. The most commonly spoken language is Mandarin, followed by Spanish
and then Hindi. English is the fourth most commonly spoken language, and yet it has become
the leading international means of communication
E The loss of a language leads to a loss of traditions and culture as well. Just as hundreds of
thousands of languages have died out, so many more will follow until we are left with just a
few. English is most people’s second language across the entire world, so English will
probably be one of them, despite the fact that it is difficult to learn.

Task A Which paragraph in the article states the following ideas?

1 Languages are all of equal importance but some are more widely spoken than others.

2 Most people are not aware of the variety of languages existing.

3 Most languages currently spoken in our world are going to disappear.

Task B Circle T for true and F for false. Correct the false statement/s on the blank line/s below.

4 The reason why some languages disappear is related to their difficulty. T F

5 Small remote tribes have their own languages for a question of identity. T F
