Hugh and his son, Thomas, lived in Jamaica. Hugh was a poor fisherman who had a small rowing boat. One night he
took Thomas fishing with him. They took water and food with them for the night. Hugh rowed the boat out to sea. At
first, the water was calm but then a strong wind began to blow. It was a terrible tropical storm. Hugh tried to row back.
The strong wind and high waves threw their boat about. He was frightened. They couldn’t do anything so they sat in the
boat all night. Hugh held Thomas in his arms. In the morning, the sea was calmer but Hugh was still worried because
they couldn’t see land. However, he looked at the sun and rowed. Thomas drank water and ate some of the food but his
father didn’t so he felt weaker and weaker. In the afternoon, they saw an aeroplane. Thomas waved his arms but it flew
away. Although the plane flew past, the pilot sent a message to the airport for a helicopter to save father and son. They
were very brave and very lucky to be alive but when rescued they felt weaker because of the sun.
