IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF INDUSTRIAL WORK PRACTICES IN THE

COMPETENCE SKILLS OF WOOD CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING IN SMK


NEGERI 2 PENGASIH

ABSTRACT

The purposes of this study are to (1) Identify the quality of SMK industry work practices on
the competence skill of wood construction engineering in SMK Negeri 2 Pengasih. (2)
Identify the constraints in improving the quality of industrial work practices on the
competence skill of wood construction engineering in SMK Negeri 2 Pengasih and find the
solution to overcome them. (3) Propose an alternative quality improvement of industrial work
practices on the competence skill of wood construction engineering in SMK Negeri 2
Pengasih.
This research is a descriptive qualitative study. The researcher uses interview and observation
to collect the data. The subject of the research consist of teachers and students of wood
construction engineering program of SMK Negeri 2 Pengasih, as well as industrial
practitioners in the field of furniture that are partners in industrial work practice. The data
analysis techniques include three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion
drawing/verification.
The result can be concluded as follows. (1) The implementation of industrial work practice at
SMK N 2 Pengasih has fulfilled the qualifying criteria as follows: (a) Based on the
practitioner's point of view, about 70% of the competencies earned in the industry were
relevant to those taught in the school. (b) Most students already have an oppressive role in the
industry. (c) Generally, students have used the latest technology. (d) The industrial parties
make every effort to guide the students. (d) Facilities provided by industry to the students of
SMK N 2 Pengasih during industrial work practice were varied according to their industry
policies. (2) In the implementation, there were several obstacles, in this way: (1) the
limitations of tools in the industry and its usage were different from the equipment in school
and it was solved by bringing their own hand tools. In case of how to use the tools, the
students actively asked the mentor or worker. (2) The limitations of the material were solved
by utilizing remaining items that could be used. (3) Student attitudes were less discipline of
time, less active, and less communicative. The industries parties and the teachers have
overcome it by giving them advice in relation to the attitude of good work in the industry. (4)
In the first weeks, the students could not comprehend about the work that should be done in
the industry. It was addressed by giving directions before the work begins.

Improvement of Industrial Work Practices

The aims of this study are to identify quality, constraints, and proposed an alternative quality
improvement of industrial work practice in the department of building engineering of wood
construction engineering program of SMK Negeri 2 Pengasih. This research uses the
qualitative approach. The respondents consist of 20 students, 3 teachers, and 5 industry
practitioners. Data collection was done by in-depth interview and observation. The results of
the research indicate that (1) the implementation of industrial work practice in SMK N 2
Pengasih has met the quality criteria of industrial work practice, the criteria are (a) relevant
competence between school and industry (b) students were using the latest technology (c)
students got optimal role and guidance d) students got adequate facilities. (2) The industrial
work practice constraints as follows: (a) equipment limitations (b) material limitations (c)
student work attitude (3) alternative quality improvement of industrial work practice namely:
(a) students should have high enthusiasm towards industrial work practice. (2) The school
should always coordinate with the institution (3) the industry should give the students
confidence.
