A NARRATIVE REPORT SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE

COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND ACCOUNTANCY,
IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS
FOR THE DEGREE OF

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

MAJOR IN MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING

MAY 2017
P2015, Internship (240 hours), 3 units-
An extensive exposure to business immersions and an on-the job training that will provide

you with the understanding of practical accountancy. The 3rd year Management Accounting students

will undergo 240 hours of hands-on to experience Practicum/On –the-job training to help them

develop the necessary competencies and skills needed in this particular field.

Introduction
Internship is the highlights of a student’s whole duration of studying. It is one of the ways in

which the school can ensure that they have not only learned inside the classroom but also to

guarantee that the knowledge they have gained can also be applied. Internship is not only a way of

measuring a student’s capacity but also it can be viewed as one of the stepping stones in reaching

their future careers.

BSBA major in Management Accounting students have been studying and continuously

learning inside the four corners of their classroom, relying solely on classroom instruction in order

to have a better understanding of what they will be facing someday. In spite of the efforts that the

instructors are exerting to ensure their learning, it cannot be denied that experience is still the best

teacher. In order to remedy that problem, on-the-job trainings were included in the curriculum. OJT

is an important part of the school’s prospectus that aims to train and orient students about the work

that they would be facing in their future career. Through OJT, interns would be prepared about field

work experiences and to experience well what is like in real situations.

Exposures experienced by each and every one of the interns in Puerto Princesa City and in

the field work as well as coping with those people working inside the agency starting from the

Auditor and their respective clients were very fruitful for the development of their mental and social

capabilities as an individual and as persons.

For the part of the interns of this report, this whole OJT experience in eventful. They have

gained lots of experiences that classroom instructions cannot provide. It gave them an insight on

how life could be for those who are working in the field of public practice. Throughout the first

until the last days of the duration of their internship, the whole group can say that they have not

only learned but also enjoyed each assignment.

WRITTEN REPORT ON THE FIRST DAY OF
PRACTICUM PARTICULARLY ON THE DAY WAS
ENDORSED BY THE ADVISER
WRITTEN REPORT ON THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICUM

1st day of our internship, dated March 23, 2017

Sir Palatino’s accounting office at Palawan State University

On-the-Job Training (OJT) aims to train and orient students about their work and future career. It is

a type of skill development where the students learn how to do work related to their field. It is also

one of the method by which students are exposed with different work situations appropriate to what

they have learned from the school. OJT also helps the students to enlighten them in the actual world

related to their field. And as we experienced an On-the-Job Training, we must say that it is really

engaging and interesting.

March 23, 2017 marked as our first date of On-the-Job Training at Domingo M. Palatino

Auditing Firm. An ordinary day for others but not for us. Each and every one of us is both excited

and nervous. Excited in such a way that we will meet the University Accountant of Palawan State

University and work with him along our journey and yet nervous for we will face a larger scope and

environment for our chosen future career.

Our call time to go to Sir Palatino’s house is 7:30am because he has an important meeting at

PSU in the morning and he will give our first task.

What are the tasks that he will assign to us? Will we accomplish all of the tasks that he will

give? What does it feel to be with the University Accountant all around, is he intimidating or

approachable? Those are the things running our minds while waiting for him. We greet him as soon

as he approaches us and explains immediately the things that we need to do. Then, he left us some

files of his clients that we have to summarize and audit. All of us were shocked after receiving all

those files because he’s so fast and thought that we already understand his instructions. He didn’t

show us of what are we going to do specifically or step-by-step instructions yet we just say that we

can do it because it’s part of job as interns. Before we left, Sir Palatino invited us to join the birthday

celebration of his daughter in the afternoon and we said that we will be there.

We went to school and started doing our task. At first, we laughed at each other just to take

away our nervous and stressed because we didn’t know what to do, where and how we will start

those files. But as the time goes by, we followed the format that was given and later on we

understand everything. Aside from that, we only have one laptop to use, so it’s hard for us to audit

the papers. Since accounting students are very resourceful, we did everything and find every ways

just to be productive on that day. At the end, even though we haven’t finish our first task but we

already made our first move.

Around 5:00pm, we went to Sir Palatino’s house to join on his daughter’s birthday party.

Together with the other OJT’s from Baluyut Auditing Firm, we were so pleased to meet their family

and grateful to be part of the Birthday celebration of Gwen, eldest daughter of Sir Palatino. They

were so kind and jolly, we ate together like a family. Our first day ends with a smile and thanks to

Almighty God that it went well.

WRITTEN REPORT ON THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICUM

March 23, 2017 marked as our first On the Job training (OJT) at Domingo M. Palatino’s

Auditing Firm. Each of us was very excited and feeling nervous that time because we don’t know

what we are going to do there. Actually we weren’t formally introduce to the firm because we just

talked to our adviser that we want to take our OJT at the palatino’s firm, and our adviser told us that

we should go to mr. Palatino because they already talked about it we’ll just tell him that we are the

interns that were assigned to his office.

I was shocked when the first task was given to us because I didn’t expect that, I was

expecting more on introducing each other and just having a little fun but sir just gave us four clients,

matching our intern numbers because he wanted us to have personal task and he will just check it

later. He just gave us the supporting documents of that particular client and their past financial

statements and we’ll do the rest of financial statements for the current year. After recording the

receipts and expenses we’ll input it directly to the worksheet that we’ve prepared and it will go

directly with the financial statement with help of linking cells. Of course all that becomes easy with

the of help of mr. Palatino. He taught us how to link and how excel works.

We didn’t finish our first 8 hours because he let us bring the clients file in the school because

at that time our classes was not officially ended, we just started early because he need us due to many

works and the tax season is coming. Before we leave his firm, he told us to comeback at 5:00 pm

because it was her daughter’s birthday and he invited us to join the little ceremony. He also invited

the other interns working on his sister’s firm so we came together that afternoon and we had our

first bonding with our boss, the food was very delicious and you can choose different menu, it was

celebrated at their house. Before we leave we took pictures during the celebration before we go

leave. That day we all go home full and happy we almost forget that, it was our first day of OJT.

-Damian, John Michael L.

WRITTEN REPORT ON THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICUM

On March 23, 2017 was the first day of our On-the-Job Training at Domingo M. Palatino

Auditing Firm, before that day Sir Palatino told us to come early in his house to orient us about

what we will be doing for the next 240 hours as being his interns. The night before the first day of

our OJT, I felt nervous and excited because that was the first time I’ll work for someone in the field

of accounting. We arrived at Sir Palatino’s residence 7:30am sharp. Sir Palatino gave each of us a

client and told us what to do, and then he said we can go home early and we can take home our

work because no one will take care of us at his house on that time, because sir has a meeting in PSU

and his wife will prepare for their daughter’s birthday. Also Sir Palatino invited us to attend on his

daughter’s birthday. And then four of us interns come up a plan to start our work in school so that

we can start our OJT as soon as possible and we can finish the job on time as Sir Palatino’s order.

As we began our work we had some couple of peaceful arguments that help us innovate our work, it

was hard at first because we are not used of it as we apply the accounting in real world, but we are

comfortable that we can do it the right way. As the night comes we attended Gwen’s birthday party,

daughter of Sir Palatino, because of that party we all felt comfortable working with Sir Palatino, he

was so kind and down to earth man. That was the first day of our OJT, it was tiring but was fun.

-Soriano, Louise Andrew F.

WRITTEN REPORT ON THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICUM

On the first day of our internship, our scheduled time of my co-interns to meet each other

was 7:30 am because they said that Sir Palatino has an important meeting at Palawan State University

since he was also the University Accountant. Honestly, I felt like I’m in the middle of being excited

and nervous because it was my first time to meet the University Accountant and there were so many

things that I’ve heard about him (good things). Because of our call time, I woke up and set my

schedule at 5:00am so that I can prepare for 2 hours and would not be late, we had this motto with

my co-interns that “first impression last” that’s why we need to give a good impression by going to

his house as early as possible.

When we arrived to their compound, it was very peaceful and it was unexpected because I

really thought that he’s house was that “bongga” or extravagant like what other former interns told

us, if I’m going to describe it, they have a simple and very down-to-earth way kind of living. Their

door was closed and I thought that they were all still asleep but when we knock, Ma’am Gi, his wife

that was young was already awake and open the door for us and told us that Sir Palatino was just

preparing and will meet us soon.

After waiting for Sir Palatino, he finally showed up and that was the first time that I saw him.

We greeted him a beautiful morning and immediately offered us a breakfast because it was his eldest

birthday and they were all preparing for it. Back to work, since he was so busy, he left us some files

that we need to summarize and audit (maybe 3 clients) and we can go to school after that. I thought

that it was so easy because we already had a background about excel but when he mention “linking”

of data, we ignored it and said that we can do it. Before we leave, he invited us to go to their

residence (Palatino’s Residence) to be part of the celebration of his eldest daughter, Gwen that we

met already on his house. He also told us to invite our fellow interns from Baluyut Accounting

Office at 5:00 or 6:00 in the afternoon. Given that it was our Boss’s invitation, we thankfully

accepted it and said that we were going on the party.

We go to school and we we’re talking about the files that we need to work out. Since we just

have one laptop, we scan every file that was given and look for the easiest client that we can finish

for that day. After so many things that happened like before I can enter the school I need to contact

a friend to help me because I’m wearing civilian and March 23 which was our first day was still a
school day and you need to wear your school uniform. I waited outside and wasted some time but

while waiting I told my co-interns that they needed to start already so that I will continue and finish

our first client. After 30 minutes, my life saver came and “poof” the day was saved and as I entered

the school, I immediately look for my co-interns at the CLC. Guess what? They haven’t done

anything and we just laugh and laugh because of course, our minds were over thinking, we didn’t

know what to do and we’re so hungry.

After lunch, we started again and our lives as being interns began.

Brainstorming, passing of jobs, summarizing, auditing, waiting, eating, sleeping, watching

movies (break time only), those things made our day. At the end, we partly finished our client

because we’re still looking for the easiest way to summarize the data and that was by linking, we

need to master that method so that it will be easy for us to make a Financial Statements.

It was a busy day for us, our minds were drained and our eyes were like eaten by the

radiation of the laptop because we’re so focused and determined to finish our jobs. But our day

wasn’t finished yet, we have a birthday party to attend and that serves as our energizer. By 6:00pm,

we change our clothes and went to Sir Palatino’s residence and waited our fellow intern’s from

Baluyut Accounting Office before we go to the exact location of the party. We already saw their

relatives arriving to the compound and Gwen, the birthday girl taught that we already leaving that’s

why she’s waved her hands and said “bye-bye”. While waiting for the others, we took pictures and

my co-interns were trying to learn different languages inside and outside the Philippines. They were

like “aliens” to me because I couldn’t understand what they are talking about. The other one

brought a dictionary and the other one searching for the words and they were talking like they live

on that place and used their languages.

After so many hours of waiting, they arrived and all of us walked towards the location of the

celebration. At first, we’re so shy to approach their relatives but after seeing Sir Palatino, we served

ourselves and seated at the first row of the table. The program started, we enjoyed the night and the

rest we’re just a memories for us.

expertise speak volumes about the work that he do and the way he do it.

His firm is committed to ensuring adherence to ethical standards. With an extensive line of

services, he sees to it that his client’s financial statements traverse the right path to be faithfully

represented. Hinged on sound accounting practices, he carry the hallmark of always abiding by what

is good and moral for all parties concerned and delivering services within the bounds of the code of

the ethics of the profession, the accounting and audit standards and the government statutory laws

and regulations.

It is an entity that provides a high quality service to its clients. A very nice person because he

taught us all his knowledge related to accounting even small things that he thinks that will help us in

the future when we graduate and start working. While doing the work, we didn’t feel any pressure

because he always checks us if there’s something that we couldn’t understand and he will explain it

to us clearly and elaborately. The good thing working with him is that he will let us work alone and

explore everything. At the end of the day, he will check our works if it’s done or there’s something

that we need to audit again.

Sir Palatino, as our manager/boss is good at supervising, mentoring and motivating us. He

taught us all his techniques and knowledge that may be helpful for us for the future and for the work

to be done well and he motivated us to keep practicing what he taught us. We learned that we are in

a team in all work that we had, we gives advices to one another and help one another to accomplish

work on time. Two things that we also learned are to go out from our comfort zones so that we can

learn a lot more and time is precious that we must make the most of it.
As his interns, we admire him for his passion doing his job. A workaholic man that will

show you how he commits his self to his work and he always takes overtime just to finish the job.

One of the best things that we knew from his family is that they are very nice people, and they just

live simply but very generous. With the time working with them, they treated us like family and they

always fed us with delicious food that we could never resist.. What can we say? It was a memorable

and an amazing experience to four of us.

Problem met, if any

The only problem that we met is that when Sir Palatino unintentionally/unknowingly gave

us the data of the previous year (2015) of a cooperative instead of 2016 data that’s why we need to

start over again to summarize and audit its information and make another financial statement.

Because of the incident, we need to go to his office to finish this client’s file and due to shortage of

time; we need to consume our holiday just catch up the deadline.

Recommendations to improve Practicum as a subject

1. Provide/focus on some IT related training.

2. Make at least one on-site visit. A site visit to the internship location by the instructor or a

designated representative has important benefits to all involved and should be a requirement

of the internship program.
