Have you ever wondered why everyone says we are destroying our planet? Or how we are
destroying our planet? Well here are just three of the many ways we are impacting our world
negatively.
Run Off
One of these three destructions of the world is called run off. Run off is the water flow that
occurs when the soil is infiltrated to full capacity and excess water from rain, melt water, or other
sources flows over the land. So when big business cut down land and put their factories their and the
chemicals they use to get out, it has a huge impact on the surrounding areas. These areas that are
being affected could be the soil, animals and water supplies. This can all occur when trees and other
natural life is removed. Without that natural environment being there, there is nothing to catch all
the dirt and or chemicals from washing into the bodies of water and contaminating them.
Fracking
If the area you live in state where there were only 50 earthquakes and then all of a sudden
over 1,000 earthquakes happened, wouldn’t you be curies to know why? If the water you drank
tasted funny and when it was exposed to a flame it lit on fire wouldn’t you want to know why? Both
of these phenomenon are the bi product of industrial mining tech called fracking
Fracking which is when people force open fissures in subterranean rocks by introducing liquid
at high pressure. Oil companies use fracking as an alternative way to get the resources that they need
such as gas, petroleum, and uranium. Fracking is being conducted around the world, they are forcing
water into rocks to breaking them. The issue is that it’s been found that after fracking rocks the areas
then have earthquakes afterwards.
A perfect example of this ongoing problem is in Oklahoma, were
there was recently a 5.6 magnitude earthquake. In Oklahoma where
the earthquake was felt, there are 181 injection wells within the area.
Unfortunately scientist are still claiming that there is not enough
evidence to link the two together. But, when you go from having an
average of 50 earthquakes before fracking to around 1,047 within the
last year.
The only solution to this issue is to this problem is to engage in
more research before injecting more and more water in the rocks.
Sonja Anderson believes that there is a lot of “ Miss-information
that has been caught up in media, there is a lot of mystery in the
chemicals they are injecting that end up in the excess water that is needed and until that all comes
out I think it’s hard to decide. I believe its impacting it negatively I think we should sustainable
energies prolonging fossil fuels.”
Throughout this reading we have talked about the issues that each one of these
environmental problems have, but they are all trying to help our demand for resources. We are part
of the problem. What we as a society need to do is come up alternative ways that can benefit the
demand and help save the world. So put on your thinking cap and help spread the word!

Women Know Sports,
But Why Can’t They Show It?
By: Nicole Cote
Would you be amazed if a girl knew more about sports then you? If she did you should be
happy. Happy to know that females know sports as well as men do. Although this is not true for all
females it is true for some. Sadly the bias of females not understanding sports is what is preventing
women from being competitive against men when it comes to a career in sports casting. This male
dominated profession is a prime example of sexism in sports. A lot of the sexism comes from
male’s judgmental attitude of women when it comes to sports. After
interviewing Krystle Sonmore from KKCO 11 News and KJCT News 8,
where she is the Sports Director/ Anchor, she explained, “I certainly feel
there is a judgmental attitude that still lingers. The sports industry has often
been a male- dominated culture, and those that have lived and breathed
sports are getting passed over for a female that may not know AS much, but
she can be taught.” Also males often choose not to discuss sports with fellow
female colleagues because they believe they do not know or care. Many
women are in this field because they love sports but it definitely is not easy
being the minority in the field. Krystle has experienced many things out on
the field as a sportscaster, “You occasionally get "cat-calls" as you're walking by, you hear a lot of
locker room talk about females in general, you get hit on often, so it's hard to balance at times.”
Staying professional is the only way Krystle has overcome these experiences. To her this job is
important, it is something she earned and loves doing, as hard as it can be at times being the
minority she has learned to overcome. It is not always easy getting the job either. As indicated
below, many times news stations will hire the attractive female over the knowledgeable one, for a
simple way to add diversity to their station and increase their ratings. “It's a two-edged sword. On
one hand, that's just how television works. It's 85% looks, 15% talent (give or take). At the same
time, there are so many females that know their stuff
and are passed up for the blonde bombshell who
wears the low-cut tops and can be fed information or
read a teleprompter (just being completely honest,
here). That is when I think it is extremely wrong;
when females who are well-educated and have a
passion for sports are passed up for a trophy girl.”
Krystle said when it comes to hiring. Unfortunately
this happens so much that even when you google
“female sportscasters” (pictured on the left), the first
links that pop up read “75 hottest female sportscaster
on TV” or “TV’s hottest female sportscasters”. Whereas if you google search, “male sportscasters”
(pictured on the right), you get links such as
“Famous Male Sportscasters” or “Top 50
Sportscasters of All Time”. These two google
searches are completely different and prove
that there really is sexism when it comes to
female sports casting. It is demeaning to
females that they are being judged based off
their looks. Sadly as Krystle said
knowledgeable females are being passed up
often for the more attractive women.
With all of this being said there are some knowledgeable women who do beat out the hot
blonde reading off the teleprompter. Krystle for example is a female who has made it in the sports
casting world. She’s a sportscaster for KKCO 11 News, and although she has experienced some
sexism she has found that, “If you want to be taken seriously, prove that you should be, in the way
you act, talk, present material, study, and even down to the way you dress.” If your brain can out
talk your body then news stations will want you. For
females it is a matter of educating themselves and
making themselves competitive with the males in the
field. From the website American Sportscasters Online,
Lesley Visser, who currently works for ESPN and ABC
Sports, and in 1976, became the first female NFL beat
writer said, "When women (sportscasters) are given
greater responsibilities and prove that they can manage
them, they build a good reputation as sportscasters." 1
women or just no women at all. This is causing women today to feel discouraged to pursue a
career in sports casting. It is upsetting to see discouraged women especially in a field that is
growing so much. One would assume that women are discouraged or news stations just want the
looks for why knowledgeable female sports casters are not being hire, but it has not been just that.
News stations justify their decision not to hire a female based off this suggestion found in an article
on Taylor & Francis Online, “Sports and sports broadcasting are structured largely by and for men,
and the literature suggests that both authoritativeness and gender affect perceptions of female
sportscasters.” This is a big example of sexism and discrimination in hiring. Many news companies
2
have not hired females because they believe that authoritativeness and gender are affecting the
perceptions of their viewers. If there was a person speaking about sports, saying the same exact
thing whether they are male or female it should not matter the gender, as long as the facts were
real, the statements were true and everything made sense, that’s all that should matter. Women
can be as knowledgeable as men when it comes to sports, especially women who grew up playing
sports. For many women sports are very interesting just as it is for men so both genders are going
to want to be knowledgeable on a topic they are interested in.
Fortunately, slowly but surely women are being given opportunities to become sportscasters
and have been chosen over the more attractive female. This is a slow step that will hopefully help
end this sexism. Leandra Reilly said in the American Sportscasters Online website that, “The
networks used to pick women for their looks, but now they require more qualifications. Some may
still hire a woman just because she is a woman and the network needs a minority in the field.” 1
Slowly sexism is decreasing but it is still present. It is present in males whose perceptions of
females on sports stay the same and even outside working as a sportscaster, women are still
underestimated when it comes to talking about sports. Krystle has experienced some judgmental
attitude from her male co- workers when it comes to talking about sports off the job. When asked if
she felt the judgment will ever go away she said, “Because the majority of sports that are covered
are testosterone-filled (baseball, hockey, football, basketball), I don't think the underlying
judgmental attitude that exists will ever go away. It may lessen, but I don't think it will ever be
nonexistent.
In conclusion not all women are genesis’s when it comes to sports, but neither are all men.
If they have the knowledge and the skills they should be given a fair chance when being hired up
against a male. Although looks are important in the media at the end of the day a news station
would rather have its facts correct then just a hot women reading off a teleprompter.

JUST DO IT
This spoof ad is depicting a roles reversed gym scene. Many times at the gym males are checking out
the females who are usually doing cardio and just walking on a treadmill. The males are usually the
ones lifting weights and many times checking out the girls in their tight- fitted workout apparel. In this ad
roles are reversed, the females are lifting the weights and the male is on the treadmill. This time the
females are checking out the male. This is a way of showing that women aren’t expected to go to the
gym and sweat and actually workout. It’s typical for them to stay out of the heavy weights area and just
stick to the cardio machines. Even at the gym females are expected to just “look pretty” and for males
they are just something nice to look at while they are doing the heavy lifting.
Nike is commonly known for their slogan, “Just Do It.” Encouraging people to push themselves harder
and achieve their goals. Saying there is no limit or restrictions, just do it. In the case of this spoof ad,
Nike is encouraging the females to just do it and go for the hot guy on the treadmill. Nike’s slogan is
used in a sexual manner rather than a motivational workout manner.

Video Games V.S. Exercise
By: Joe Calaca
Video games are electronic pastimes that involves human interaction within the user interface to
generate visual feedback on a visual device. They typically try to enhance the minds of human beings by
providing additional help in information and interactivity through certain genres. These genres could intend to
casual games, serious games, and educational games. Demographics have shown over the years that video
games have been spread out and used by almost everyone around the world. An evaluation by Nielsen Active
Gamer Study in 2005 took a survey of 2,000 regular players and found that the game is actually diversifying.
The average age group for male audiences have considerably expanded within the 25-40 year age range. Many
people would expect the men of the world to be the most engaged in such a craft, however, women have
increased drastically in amusing themselves with video games. A different study by the Entertainment Software
Association (ESA) in 2011 went out to search for updated research on the topic. They found that 42 percent of
all women participate in playing the virtual entertainment and that women that are 18 years of age, are a quickly
accelerating stat in the demographic. They were also informed that the average gamer is 30 years old and has
been playing for 12 years. Overall, 82 percent of people, 18 years of age and older, invest some portion of their
life to video games. That’s more than three quarters of the world!
I think it is safe to say that everyone is engrossed in the industry that is video gaming. Whether if it is
physically sitting down and pressing buttons on a controller or physically walking around on a handheld device
to motivate the mind to be more receptive to the product. And that’s the key word… physicality. With all these
people loafing around and giving their fingers and hands training, the body stays at a stand still and doesn’t get
that much exercise. Although it may help the brain, some of those 82 percent of people are suffering from
obesity, depression, and rely on the internet to have social support. Not all get the nutrients and necessity of a
healthy workout.
With the above paragraph being said and with the facts being
shown, people are getting worse and worse in body shape the more
they play video games. Corporations are now noticing that their products
are resulting in less activity in fitness. With the often increase of obesity
known in negative reports around the world, would immediately inspire
the gaming companies. The reason being is because they have an
opportunity where they can present a new creation that could
revolutionize the way we can look at gaming. Companies and
businesses are now starting to introduce the idea that video games can
also get your body moving and active with the production of newly
generated exergames. Exergaming is exactly what you would assume it
to be… video games that help you exercise the more you play. Each manufactured item that the
companies release have motion sensored technology that picks up and animates your body movement
from the real domain and puts it into the game. Gaming industries then spread out and cover their
consumers with their favorite games that the corporation would have had previously. The most popular
exergaming systems include the Wii, Xbox Kinect, and the newly established Playstation Move, as well
as others.
Exergames consist of, and could very well be made up of, genres like sports, action, education, and
many more virtually entertaining investments. The way they can get us going is based off our own interest.
Rebecca Battista, an associate professor in the department of health, leisure, and exercise science at
Appalachian State University, says that “exergaming is a great way to exercise at home.” She continues to
explain, “The competitive aspect of racking up points and advancing to higher levels can also be a great
motivator.” This can help the confidence level for a person suffering from depression as well as saving money
on gas from driving to the gym all the time. According to a review in the journal Pediatric Exercise Science,
playing active video games is
comparable to a mild to moderate
physical activity (like walking or a casual
bike ride). “Playing for weight loss would
enact attentive training for 60 to 90
minutes in a five day span,” says
exercise physiologist Pete McCall, a
spokesperson for the American Council
on Exercise. He goes on to mention, “If
your main goal is to drop a dress size or
two, these games are a great place to
start.”
The influence of exergames has
developed a highly impressive
environment where gaming companies
give their audiences the option of either
sitting on the couch or actually getting involved with the games they choose. Industries have realized the fact
that playing interactive video games is indeed starting a trend where people are getting fitter and also provide
activity while enhancing the development of their intelligence. In my opinion, I would love to kill two birds with one
stone and help my brain enhance its motor or technical skills while my body performs and gets me more in
shape with this emergence. Even if it’s a game specifically made for exercising or a fun sports game where you
can represent your favorite team, exergames have really revolutionized the way we can be interactive with
gaming. It now shows that video games can really be a secondary activity and brings back the fun of being
healthy.

Subway is one of the world’s most successful fast-food chains. They’re known for their
sandwiches that customers are able to create themselves when they go into the restaurant. The
customers are able to tell the workers what kind of bread, meat, toppings, dressings, etc. they want
on their sandwiches. With people so health conscious now-a-days, you would think that the
customers would know what chemicals are going into the food from Subway. However, just when
you think that having wheat bread isn’t all that bad for you, think again. Subway adds a chemical
known as Azodiacarbonamide which is found in yoga mats, shoe rubber, and synthetic leather. By
adding this chemical it creates elasticity to the bread to try and make it last longer. When
consumers found out this was in bread they were very upset and started a petition for subway to get
rid of the chemical and ended up winning. Since then, Subway way is in the process of removing
Azodicarbonamide. The spoof ad I created is saying that Subway is the wrong place for people to
eat unless they want to eat yoga mats, shoe rubber, or synthetic leather in their food.

And Animals Aren’t
Today, society wants everything in an instant. If they need to find
out where to get something, see how much something costs, or where to
go they just look it up. In this respect, this is why businesses should be
set up on social networks such as: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
These three websites are the new newspaper for most people and in
particular teenagers. I believe that businesses can’t afford to not be on
the internet. When there is no information about them, we move on to
the next place, therefore the company is losing valuable and loyal
customers to help increase their profits.
According to Louis Columbus, a contributor to Forbes magazine, “The accuracy, speed and
precision of IT systems means the difference between winning or losing customers, keeping supply chains
profitable, and solidly translating new concepts into revenue-producing products and services.” This can be
shown through sending emails, posting a status on Facebook, or tweeting every day to promote new
products and offering customers’ discounts. From my personal experience, I am more likely to buy a
product from a store once it is on clearance or if the price is discounted. Like most people, I don’t have
time to go to the store to buy a product and I am more likely to purchase it when a store offers free
shipping online. Most of the time, I receive this information from an email from the company. In a recent
survey from VisionCritical that Forbes magazine wrote about stated that “…25% Facebook and 34% of
Twitter users reported buying tech tools or electronic devices after seeing recommendations or shares via
these specific social networks. Categories that didn’t fare as well on the two major networks were crafts
and DIY and home décor. Less than 10% of Facebook and Twitter users reported making recent
purchases in those categories. However, those categories had higher conversion rates on Pinterest. 21%
of Pinterest users reported buying something craft and DIY-related and 18% purchased something under
the home décor category.”
Recently, I was able to interview Joe Diviak who works for Logical Mobility. Here, he connects
apps to websites in the late 90’s. I was able to discuss with him how businesses have changed and
whether or not he feels they need technology in order to run successfully. I asked Joe, if he thought
businesses can afford not to have an app and if they do, do they have an advantage over other
competitors? Why or why not? When he answered,
“Having a mobile presence is essential for most businesses today whether
they realize it or not. Not only does it give them an advantage over their
competitors but it gives them the tools and resources to actively and
effectively engage their clients. With that being said, big data and data
analytics are the gold for any company and marketing division to pan for. The
benefits are simply enormous.”
With this, I also asked how have advertisers had to adapt to going from print media to everything being
digital? “I believe advertisers now have to look at smaller
groups and demographics versus a single, giant net on
television or print and hoping to get a large chunk of the mass
audience. With software analytics and tools, advertisers can
thoroughly engage smaller, targeted demographics in real
time.”
The last question I asked was if he thought if businesses aren’t on social media, do they lose out on
customers? Like me, Joe also believes that businesses will lose out on customers and profit. “I do think
they miss out on customers and the reason being, for the first time in human history businesses can
completely engage with their customers and audience in ways traditional media could never have
imagined.”
All in all, the advancement in technology over the past two decades has changed the way we do
business today. Companies have been forced to change their business models in order to conform and
compete for market share. Business’s need to be on and have social networking accounts to interact with
their customers. When companies don’t, there is a chance of losing customers and they miss out on an
opportunity to make profit.
