Level: Intermediate
Yarn Weight: Worsted #4
Colour: 2 colours – colour change indicated in pattern
Hook: 4.25 mm (or whatever you have already been using for your 6” squares)
Size: 15 cm x 15 cm (approx. 6 inches)
Notes: I use US Crochet stitch terminology.

Abbreviations
(see Special Stitch glossary at the end for instructions if needed)

ss – slip stitch htr – half treble crochet sc – single crochet


sp/s – space/s fphtr – front post half treble crochet hdc – half double crochet
st/s – stitch/es fpdc – front post double crochet dc – double crochet
ch - chain dc2tog – double crochet 2 together tr – treble crochet
st ch – starting chain dc4tog – double crochet 4 together fp – front post

Block Pattern

Round 1:
• Using Colour A, begin with a magic circle
or ch 4 and join the last ch to the first
with a ss to make a loop.
• Ch 1,
• 12 sc,
• join with ss to 1st sc.
{12 sts}
Round 2:
• Ch 3 (st ch),
• dc in same sp as ss,
• Repeat 5 times:
○ ch 2,
○ skip 1 st,
○ 2 dc in next st,
• ch 2,
• skip 1 st
• join with ss to 3rd ch of st ch.
{12 sts and 6 x 2 ch sps}

Round 3:
• Ch 3 (st ch),
• dc in next st,
• Repeat 5 times:
o ch 1,
o 4 dc in 2 ch sp,
o ch 1,
o dc2tog,
• ch 1,
• 4 dc in 2 ch sp,
• ch 1
• join with ss around first 2 sts like fp st.
• NOTE: the st ch & first dc count as a dc2tog.
Alternatively you can use a false dc to start and
make a dc2tog using that instead.
{30 sts and 12 x 1 ch sps}
Round 4:
• ch 6 (counts as st ch + ch 3),
• Repeat 5 times:
o skip 1 ch sp,
o dc4tog,
o ch 3,
o skip 1 ch sp,
o fphtr (or fpdc if you find fphtr too
loose) in next st (around the posts
of the dc2tog),
o ch 3,
• skip 1 ch sp,
• dc4tog,
• ch 3,
• skip 1 ch sp
• join with ss to 3rd ch of st ch.
• Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.
{12 sts and 12 x 3 ch sps}
Round 5:
• Attach Colour B to any fphtr(fpdc) with a
standing dc,
• Repeat eleven times:
o 4 dc in 3 ch sp,
o dc in next st,
• 4 dc in 3 ch sp
• join with ss to standing dc.
{60 sts}

Round 6:
• ch 6 (counts as st ch + ch 2),
• tr in same sp as ss,
• Repeat 3 times:
o htr in next 2 sts,
o dc in next 2 sts,
o hdc in next 2 sts,
o sc in next 2 sts,
o hdc in next 2 sts,
o dc in next 2 sts,
o htr in next 2 sts,
o (tr, ch 2, tr, ch 2, tr) in next st,
• *htr in next 2 sts,
• dc in next 2 sts,
• hdc in next 2 sts,
• sc in next 2 sts,
• hdc in next 2 sts,
• dc in next 2 sts,
• htr in next 2 sts
• tr in same sp as first sts,
• ch 2,
• join with ss to 4th ch of st ch.
• If square is 6”, fasten off yarn and weave
in ends. If not 6”, proceed to round 7.

Round 7 (if needed):
• sc in same sp as ss,
• Repeat 3 times:
o 2 sc in 2 ch sp,
o sc in next 16 sts,
o 2 sc in 2 ch sp,
o (sc, ch 2, sc) in next st,
• *2 sc in 2 ch sp,
• sc in next 16 sts,
• 2 sc in 2 ch sp
• sc in same sp as first st,
• ch 2,
• join with ss to first st.
• Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.

● Yo twice. Insert hook in next stitch and draw up a loop (4 loops on hook)
● Yo and draw through two loops (3 loops on hook)
● Yo and draw through remaining loops (1 loop on hook)

fphtr:

● Yo twice. Insert hook behind post of stitch (from front to back to front again) and draw
up a loop (4 loops on hook)
● Yo and draw through two loops (3 loops on hook)
● Yo and draw through remaining three loops (1 loop on hook)

Standing dc:

● Hold the yarn end with the last two fingers of your hook-holding hand.
● Holding the hook in your first two fingers and thumb, wrap the yarn around the hook
twice.
● Insert the hook into the desired stitch.
● Yarn over and pull up a loop.
● Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook.
● Yarn over and pull through the last two loops on the hook (completing as for a normal
double crochet).
● Continuing to hold on to the yarn end, make the next double crochet in the standard
manner.
● You can let go of the tail, and continue to make stitches according to the pattern. If you
used this technique on the previous row, crochet over the tail that was left at the top
from that row. The loose end at the top of this row can either be woven in with a
needle, or crocheted over in the next row!

fpdc:

• Yarn over (wrap the yarn around your hook).
• Insert your hook into the front of your work, behind the indicated stitch, and then
through your work such that your hook is now at the front of your work again.
• Yarn over and pull up a loop. (4 loops on hook)
• Yarn over and pull through 2 loops on your hook. (2 loops on hook)
• Yarn over and pull through final 2 loops on your hook. (1 loop on hook)
