On, March 23, 2016 I Khadia Bennett have decided to write my Personal philosophy.

This narrative embodies my belief and thinking as a person. Throughout my educational journey
to become a professionally registered nurse, I will keep self-reflecting on this narrative and
comparing my progress. This will however, mark my learning and growth as I progress each
semester.
One of the best inspirational speakers of all time, the great Martin Luther King Jr, said in
his words, “life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?” I
Khadia Bennett would like to be an asset to the healthcare field. From the moment I could
formulate sentences and carry out a conversation, I have wanted to be a nurse. My niece
allowed me to zero-in on nursing as my ultimate career goal. At only five months old, my niece
entered this world. I have seen the nurses and doctors work tirelessly to keep my niece alive. I
saw myself in each of the nurses that cared for my niece.
Since that day, I have made strides towards that dream. I received an Associates of Arts
Degree from Eastern Florida State College and decided to move to New York to attend Adelphi
University, with my hopes of gaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. This drive to become an
exceptional nurse influenced me to align myself within the healthcare field. I have volunteered at
the Palm Bay Hospital for a couple of months and I have competed in the Health Occupation
Students Association (H.O.S.A) in Florida and even held a Home Health Aide job with an
agency in Florida. Home Instead Senior Care gave me my start. Working at Home Instead
Senior Care I saw my weaknesses and strengths.
I learned how to listen to the concerns of the elderly, how to be selfless, how to be
empathetic and how to endure long work hours. Being persistent is my weakness. At all times I
push myself to be greater. So, if a problem presents itself and I cannot figure it out, I will not
stop until that problem is solved. I believe that I should be the nurse I would want as a patient.
The late Maya Angelou stated that “You can only become truly accomplished at something you
love. Don't make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them
so well that people can't take their eyes off you." My aim is to carry out the words of Miss Maya
Angelou in my future nursing career.
Today, May 18, 2018, having completed my Baccalaureate Degree I can truly say that
my philosophy has improved. I have since gained a magnitude of knowledge. Throughout my
first clinical semester, Fundamental of Nursing was introduced to me. Fundamentals of Nursing
brought everything into perspective.Fundamentals of Nursing laid out the principles and
practices of nursing and highlighted key concepts to care for an individual. It was throughout the
Evidence-Based Practice course that I started linking task with evidence. It was at this pivotal
moment I started to gain confidence in my role as a student nurse.
I transposed what was taught in lecture to my clinical experience and it was through
doing so that I gained confidence. "Being persistent is my weakness. At all times I push myself
to be greater. " This was a quote I made March 23rd 2016 and it is still holds stubbornly today. I
have learned that as a nurse being persistent is key. It is through persistence one solves
problems and generate great ideas. While on my clinical rotation I was tasked to do a full
assessment on a patient and report all findings to my clinical professor. While performing my
assessment another patient was in bed B being assessed by his nurse. The nurse told me that
her patient in bed B will be receiving blood and after she checks the patient's blood pressure
and follows the necessary procedure to administer blood I was suppose to follow up with a new
set of vitals. The nurse then took her lunch break since she administer the morning and midday
medication and performed all the necessary task and assessments that needed to be carried
out. It was now time for me to follow up with vitals on the patient in bed B and I noticed he was
sweating profusely, extremities were cold and clammy, pulses were weak. I escalated my
findings to the nurse that have been assigned to the patients and she told me that she would
come in and check on this patient. I waited for her but she was busy attending to other
situations. I knew that it was stated in the Code of Ethics for nurses that all nurses should foster
the ethical principle of Beneficence.
Beneficence is the nurse's action to promote good. Or in other words, doing what is best
for the patient. I located another nurse and explained what has unfolded in the patient's room
and she quickly sprung into action.. A rapid response was called because the patient's condition
had change. If it had not been for persistence the patient could have died. My goal as a nurse is
to be a nurse with purpose. Mahatma Gandhi stated "The best way to find yourself is to lose
yourself in the service of others." I am ready and eager to carry out the code of ethics and to
best service the people within my community.
