MPPU1034 Applications of Statistics in Educational Research

LAB ACTIVITY 1

Activity 1

Find out who is who in your class. Who are in which postgraduate program?

(a) Create a pie chart for the distribution.

(b) Create a bar graph for the distribution.

ACTIVITY 2

The table below shows the length of time in minutes per day for a number of
students doing revision for two subjects: Statistic and Calculus.

Statistic 32 30 30 29 28 37
26 25 25 24 23 32
20 20 18 17 10 7
Calculus 24 28 28 27 24 24
26 23 22 21 18 18
29 16 14 11 10 8

(a) What type of data is presented in the table?

(b) How many students are doing revision? __________

(c) Use Open office Calc to complete the following table:

Statistic Calculus
Median
Mode
Mean
Variance
Standard
deviation

(c) Which distribution is more feasible? Explain.

(d) If the length of time for each student doing revision is increased by 5
minutes, what will happen to the median, mode, mean and variance?

Activity 3

(a) Using the data for doing revision on statistic from Activity 1, create
histogram, polygon curve and ogive using OpenOffice calc.

(b) Create two questions for the purpose of investigating some mathematical
ideas about Activity 1.

Activity 4

The two tables present data for two research: Research 1 and 2.
The first table shows the wake-up time and academic performance of 8
children. The second table shows the academic performance of two group of
students. The first group is taking the test in a room with temperature of 250C
and the other group in a room with temperature 0f 300C.

(a) What can you say about the type of both researches.
(b) What type of variables involve in both researches?
(c) What type of data involve in both researches?
(d) How do you analyze each set of data?
(e) What conclusion can you claim from both researches.

Activity 5

Get 2 ratio or interval data from each individual in your class. Study the
relationship between the 2 variables using 3 different applications:
Libreoffice, PSPP and Geogebra. What can you conclude? Which is the best
method, Why?
There are two kinds of statistics, the kind you look up, and the kind you make
up.
