General Lesson Plan

Grade Level / Subject Area (Discipline) Teacher Candidate Name Date of Lesson
Grade 3 – Reading Emily Hall 3/27/18

Common Core Standards and/or State of Michigan GLCEs and/or HSCEs (Danielson 1a and 1c)
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.1
Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific
textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.1
Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis
for the answers.
Important Concepts (Danielson 1a)
Visualization as a comprehension strategy

Learning Outcomes (Danielson 1a and 1c)

Students will visualize as a means to understand a text by
• Illustrating a scene within chapter six of Sarah, Plain and Tall
• Citing specific evidence within a text that allowed them to infer what the image/scene might have
looked like
Assessment Summary (Danielson 1f)
Formative:
Questioning as formative assessment during music visualization activity (criteria: students cite at least two
specific things from the music that allowed them to create the illustration)

Summative:
Students will complete the visualization page in which they choose an event from the text, illustrate their
visualization, and cite specific evidence from the text (criteria: evidence corresponds with drawing)
Prerequisite Relationships to New Learning (Danielson 1a)
Students will have some prior knowledge regarding visualization and in making inferences.

Flexibility and Responsiveness to Students’ Learning Needs (Danielson 3e)

After formatively assessing, I will be able to recognize if instruction needs to be adapted or if material needs
to be reviewed. If students do not grasp the concepts, I will review and continue to assess to be sure they
understand. If they understand more quickly than anticipated, I will ask students to create a descriptive
paragraph in which they have another peer visualize/illustrate based on their writing.
Instructional Procedures (Danielson 1e)
Assessing Prior Knowledge:
1. Ask students what it means to visualize. Discuss how visualizing aids comprehension. Revisit what
comprehension means.
2. Read the learning target. Have students jot down one thing they know about visualization or the
learning target in general.
Introduction:
1. Give students the music visualization handout. Play about one minute from each of the four videos
and give time for students to illustrate what they heard. Remember to “blank” the projection screen
while the video is playing.
2. Discuss their illustrations. Ask: What about the music helped you illustrate? How can we relate this to
reading? What did illustrating help you do?
Interaction:
1. Read chapter six from the novel. Discuss the chapter, and summarize the events that took place in
the chapter.
2. Ask several students what they were visualizing when they were reading. What evidence from the
text made them “infer” or visualize that?
Closure:
1. Hand out the visualization sheet and explain that they are to choose a scene from the chapter,
illustrate their visualization, and cite specific evidence from the text that enabled them to draw what
they did.
2. Have students share with a partner.
3. Close the session with revisiting the learning target. What is one thing you learned about visualizing?
What did it help you do?
