Abstract: The present work describes an approach to drought forecasting in the Inaouen basin, using and comparing two
methods: the first based on artificial neural network Multilayer Perceptron type (ANN-MLP) and the second based on
multiple linear regression (MLR). Both methods were applied to predict the drought index SPI (Standardized Precipitation
Index).
During the first stage, the calculation of the SPI was performed for three time scales 3.6 and 12 months. This is achieved by
adjusting the frequency distribution of monthly records of precipitation to a probability density function. In a second step,
three prediction models were built using for inputs a data set comprising past values of the SPI calculated, monthly
precipitation values and also introducing the NAO index to estimate the effect of the North Atlantic Oscillation on the
drought in the region.
The performance prediction model incorporating three variables as inputs (M3 model) are considerably higher than those
established by the other models only considering precipitation and / or SPI. This optimal model (M3) has been applied to the
prediction of drought in the region based on the two methods of RNA and MLR prediction and performance results show
very good information with a slight advantage of the ANN method.
