Dear Parishioners,
The Empty Tomb tells the story … “When Mary went to the tomb it was still dark but it was
also the first day of the week; it was a new beginning”.
The Easter message is that Jesus has confronted suffering, betrayal, destruction, the cross
and all that is evil and was raised up by the Father’s power: “He has destroyed death for
ever”.
While we live in a good and evil world; while we struggle as a humanity with all that is evil,
we know that Jesus has redeemed us and triumphed over the power of darkness. The cross
is a sign of glory, not of destruction. This is why the sufferings of human life, while tragic,
can be transformed into redemption. The violence in our world, the human tragedies, the
wars and rumours of wars can somehow remind us that Jesus has taken all evil on himself
and save us by his glorious resurrection.
In this context of Easter, we remember the words of Jesus: “Unless the wheat grain falls on
the ground and dies, it remains a single grain, but is it dies it yields a rich harvest”.
Jesus risen from the dead is the source of our ‘rich harvest’ of life leading to eternity.
PLEASE PRAY for the success of our Justice and Peace Pilgrimage to Europe, beginning
Monday 2nd April. We hope to build bridges between nations and not borders; to share
peace initiatives with groups like PAX Christi, ecumenical connections at Taize and human
rights issues at Calais, Brussels, Strasbourg and Geneva. Our visit to Rome and Assisi will
focus on God’s creation and the message of St Francis and Pope Francis.
It will be a busy pilgrimage and we hope to be able to invite some of those we meet to a
future ‘bridge-building’ gathering in the South of England in due course. Many thanks for
your prayers.
