2010 Leinster Sea Swim Season
At last it is getting to the time of year when we can renew our friendships and rivalries.
Some have continued to brave the sea throughout the winter, others will consider brief
dips in May, a large proportion will put off the evil day until the first race of the season.
On behalf of the Open Sea Committee I would like to welcome you all back to the 2010
season. We are also looking forward to meeting many new entrants who have decided to
take the plunge for the first time this year.
The season promises to be very enjoyable with over 30 swims on the calendar and a
number of new events. Our swims are for everybody from those who just aspire to finishing a race to those
competing for swimmer of the year and fastest times. This year we hope to see some aspiring Olympians
lining up for our races and perhaps seeking advice from some our of more experienced open sea swimmers.
For their benefit we shall be holding a 5 and 10 K event in Lough Dan in September.
Dublin is the 2010 European City of Sport. This gives an added importance to all our swims. As part of this
we expect the Liffey Swim to be a particularly exciting occasion. We are very happy with the continuing
support of Dublin City Council. Our association with them in this historic event gives us great pride in our
city.
Our other historic Blue Riband event is the Dun Laoghaire Harbour swim. We are delighted that the Dun
Laoghaire Harbour Company have increased their support for this swim. This year it will be a much bigger
festival with associated events being held along the pier. We are having a family swim before the main races.
We hope this will be an opportunity for parents and children to have a taste of what open sea swimming is
like in very safe conditions. There will also be a demonstration water polo match after the main swim.
Safety of swims continues to be our main priority. With this in mind we have made the format for the return
of safety plans for the races more straightforward. I would strongly ask the clubs holding races to complete
these and return them on time. We are still refining the use of electronic timing for some of our races but we
feel it has been a good success. We have made a number of changes to the points system which we hope
will make the competition for Swimmer and Club for the Year fairer and more exciting. We are pleased that
Dublin Port have continued their sponsorship of these competitions. We hope to increase our association
with them into the future.
Finally, Joe Browne retired as handicapper last year. We would like to thank him for his many years of hard
work in controlling our races. We hope we get to see him from time to time when he is not applying his skill
to his other great sporting interest! We are delighted to welcome Martin Monks as the new Honorary
Handicapper. We feel he will do a wonderful job. I would ask you all to give Martin every assistance in this
sometimes very difficult and thankless position.
I look forward to seeing you all shortly and I wish you a safe and successful open sea season.
John Redmond
Chairman
