Inquiry Project

Name__________________________________________ Due Date: _________________

English 10
Overview: For this assignment, you will independently explore a topic of your choosing through the
Inquiry Process. You will have about two weeks to develop and answer questions that you have on the
topic. This project will consist of three components:

1. Inquiry Questions (15 points)

All Inquiries begin as questions, so a major part of this project will be working to develop your
skill at asking them. We will begin by developing initial questions in class, but for full credit for
this requirement, you will need to demonstrate that you have meaningfully focused and
extended your questions throughout your research. This means that you identify concepts you
do not understand as you go along and that you work to develop your understanding. It means
that as you find out more about your selected topic, you adapt your question to reflect your new
knowledge. You will answer these adapted questions (at least 2) in your essay. You will
complete the attached question log to track your inquire questions. The day your paper is due, this
worksheet will be collected and graded.

2. Reading Log (24 points total)

Your main inquiry activity for this project will be reading. To keep track of the reading you do,
you will keep a reading log that compiles citations and important knowledge gained through the
reading. You are to spend an average of a half hour reading for your project for every day of the
Inquiry Project. You should have a total research time of at least 3 hours and at least 6 high
quality sources. The Reading Log is attached to the back of this document. Each daily log is
worth 4 points – 1 for the required time, 1 for appropriate reading and correct MLA citation, 2 for
developed notes, which include at least 3 sentences summarizing what the article was about and
how it helps answer your posed questions. Be sure to include quotes from the article as well.

3. Essay (100 points)

Finally, you will compose a 3 to 4 page essay, which develops a focused response to your inquiry
question(s). Most importantly, your essay must demonstrate your understanding and thoughtful
consideration of a range of source materials. You must quote and integrate at least 3 sources
into your paper using in-text citation. Your essay should be clearly focused by a well-crafted
thesis statement, deliberately organized to reflect a planned arrangement of ideas, thoroughly
developed with relevant and properly documented source materials, and written in clear, engaging
language free of conventions related errors. You will take your essay through all stages of the
writing process, from pre-writing to editing and proofreading. You will also include a “Works
Cited” for the last page of your paper. This page does NOT count towards your 3-4 page
requirement. The back of this page shows you the proper set up to your paper.
