Describe and demonstrate methods used in the scientific study of Earth and in observing and interpreting its component materials Ontrenpese 2. Identify evidence for the rock cycle, and use the rock eycle concept to interpret and explain the characteristics of particular rocks _| ‘Specific 1-1 explain the need for common terminology and conventions in describing rocks and eee _| Minerals, and apply suitable terms and conventions in describing sample materials 2-1 distinguish between rocks and minerals 2-2 describe characteristics of the three main classes of rocks—igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic—and describe evidence of their formation Students will: 1) Understand the definition of igneous rock, sedimentary rock, metamorphic rock. 2) Compare and contract igneous rock, sedimentary Rocke: Made up of one or more pure, naturally ‘occurring, non living crystalline materials called. minerals, - Magma: rock, metamorphic rock. = Igneous rock: a rode thats formed by the 3) Understand how rocks form and morph into solidification of hot magma or lava, different types of rocks. ~ Sedimentary rock: made out of sediment ~loose ‘material, such as bits of rock, minerals, and plant and animal remains. ~ Sediment: loose msteril, such as bits of roc, minerals, and plant and animal remains - Metamorphic rock : A type of rock made when high pressures and heatact on another type of rock. ~ Sediment: loose material such as bits of roc, minerals and piant and animal remains. ‘Observations On task + Critical discussions about the types of rock and the process. Find out how you can demonstrate the process using candy. Lab Materials: Staroursts, foil, wax paper, beakers, hot water, coloured pencils, textbook. Procedure: 1. Unwrap your different coloured Starbursts. 2. Stack all three Starbursts on top of each other. wrap them in wax paper. and put them inside the plastic bag and press them together. You may have to squish it with a textbook. Draw what you see. What type of rock have you created? How do you know? 3. Roll the rock between your hands appiying heat and pressure. Draw what you see. What type of rock have you created? How do you know? Name: 4, Now take your plastic bag with your rock inside and place it in the hot watter (DO NOT PUT YOUR FINGERS IN THE WATER!) for one minute. Take it ‘out and apply pressure again. Draw what you see. What type of rock have you created? How do you know? 5, Brainstorm other ways that you could create sedimentary rock (use the definition in your notes). 6. Brainstorm other ways you could create metamorphic rock (use the definition in your notes).
