EAS152: STRENGTH OF MATERIALS

Assignment 1 (Topic 1 and Topic 2)

Q1
In the structure shown Fig.1, an 7.5mm diameter pin is used at A, and 12.5mm diameter
pins are used at B and D. A load P=45kN is applied at C. Determine : (a) shearing
stress in pin at A; (b) shearing stress in pin at B; (c) bearing stress between pin at A and
horizontal rigid bar ABC; (d) bearing stress between pin at B and links joining B and D;
(e) maximum normal stress in each of link joining B and D.

Q2
Two horizontal 22kN forces are applied at pin B of the assembly shown in Fig.2. Knowing
that a pin of 25mm diameter is used at each connection (A, B and C), determine the
maximum value of the normal stress in (a) link joining B and A; (b) link joining B and C; (c)
shearing stress in pin at A; (d) shearing stress in pin at C.

Q3

The specimen shown in Fig.3 is made from a 25mm diameter cylindrical steel rod with two 38mm
outer-diameter sleeves bonded to the rod as shown. Knowing that E=200 GPa, determine : (a) the
load P so that the total deformation is 0.075mm; (b) the corresponding deformation of the central
portion BC.

Q4
Each of the links AB and CD in Fig.5 is made of aluminium (E=80GPa) and has a cross-sectional
area of 125mm2. Knowing that they support the rigid member BC, determine the vertical
deflection of point B, E and C.

Q5
The connection shown in Fig.6 is used to connect the rods used to hold a wall. Diameter of the
rod is 25mm and the diameter of the two legs of the turn-buckle is 15.0mm. Given that maximum
allowable stress in the rod is 200MPa and maximum allowable normal stress in the two legs of
the turn-buckle is 275MPa, determine the maximum pulling force from the wall that the connection
is able to resist.

Q6
If the load in Q1 is reversed in direction of action with the magnitude maintained to be
the same as shown in Fig.6, check if there is any changes to the answer to part(a) to (e)
in Q1. Calculate the new solution if there is changes.
