Purpose: /1
In this experiment, the sulfate content of an unknown soluble sample is to be determined. The unknown
is dissolved in distilled water with 6M HCl and 0.1 M barium chloride (BaCl2) solution is added to
precipitate out the sulfate as barium sulfate (BaSO4).

Table 1 shows the data needed in order to compute the percentage of sulfate present in the unknown
soluble sample through gravimetric analysis.

Discussion: /2
Gravimetric analysis is a method in quantitative analysis where an unknown sample is dissolved in an
appropriate solvent, and the analyte is converted to an insoluble form of a known compound. The
precipitate is then collected, dried and weighed. From this weight, the amount or percent of the analyte
in the original sample can be determined.
The experiment was started by dissolving unknown T sample in distilled water and 6 HCl solution. The
addition of BaCl2 solution to form precipitate of BaSO4 was carried out slowly and with continuous stirring
to let the reaction completion. If not enough time for the reaction to complete ,a lower yield of the
precipitate would occur. In this experiment, it is needed to have large crystal formation through slow
precipitation to obtain higher percentage yield of the SO42- present in the unknown sample by slowly
adding the 0.1 M BaCl2.
Conclusion: /1
The result obtained from the conducted experiment yielded to 66.92% of sulfate present in the unknown
sample T.
