Grade Level Grade 3 Duration 27 minutes (approximate)

Objectives/Outcomes (Indicate GCO and SCO) (Indicate SCO in student friendly language)
GCO: Demonstrate an understanding of how citizens participate in public decision making

Introduction
We will then introduce our topic and talk about the different types of social action and give examples. We will

students to think back to when they were in school about some things that they might have participated in.

Assessment
We will use the APK activity to assess prior knowledge that the students may already have about social
action projects.

We will complete the scenario question to assess what the students learned from the presentation on social
action projects and see how effective the lesson is/was.

Develop the Instruction

We will introduce our topic and talk about the different types of social action and give examples. (2 minutes)

We will then complete an APK activity to see what students already know about social action. We will get
the students to think back to when they were in school about some things that they might have participated
in. They will be given one minute to discuss this question before the discussion begins and they share their
ideas. (3 minutes)

We will finish our topic by introducing the framework for creating a social action project. (2 minutes)

We will then split the class into groups (Amy will number off 1-4) to do a small activity (scenario) getting
students to create their own social action project for a grade 3 social studies class. The activity they do will
depend on which type of social action they are given. Each group will write their ideas on chart paper with
markers that Jenna will hand out while Amy numbers off students. Each group will also use their devices to
research social action organizations/community needs. (10 minutes)

Group 1 – Direct Local Action

Group 2 – Indirect Local Action

Group 3 – Indirect National Action

Group 4 – Indirect Global Action

Each group will then stand up and present their ideas for a social action project. (8 minutes)

Wrap up will be the connection to the grade 3 GCO and SCO for social studies and how this activity can be
used in class. (2 minutes)

Closure
