BASIS: ANSI Code Criterion Formula (para. 119, ANSI Code for Power Piping B31.1) can be used under certain
conditions to determine whether a detailed analysis should be made for a given layout. This formula is
based on ASTM metals that are schedule 40 (as a mean). Thus it cannot be used for large thin wall pipe;
that is, 6" and larger, schedule 10 and and below. The formula is suitable only when the piping system
meets the following conditions:
NOTE: Always begin a new case by retrieving the original file. Direct entry of data in cells that originally contain table lookups
could cause functions to be lost, or incorrect calculations. I format cells requiring entry colored RED; calculated
values are black.
The User must be aware that compliance with this formula does not ensure that the terminal
reactions will be satisfactory. Reference: ANSI B31.3 - 1973 Para 319.4.1.
1.) Enter the system and segment identification at cells C4 & C5.
2.) Enter the nominal pipe size at cell C8.
3.) The outside diameter will be automatically looked up and show at cell C9.
4.) Select the material class via the drop-down at G7. At present allowance for carbon and stainless are only included.
5.) Enter the pipe temperature at C10, the unit expansion will then be looked up and then determined by interpolation
and returned to cell G9.
6.) Enter the complete segment length at cell G10.
7.) Enter the X, Y, & Z segment lengths at cells C14, C15, & C16.
8.) Enter the X, Y, & Z segment movement (if necessary) at cells F14, F15, & F16.
9.) The individual segment expansion is calculated and shown at cells H23, H24, & H25.
10.) The criterion is determined and shown at cell H41, with the appropriate indication of compliance shown on row 44.
