National Seminar on Blockchain and Cryptocurrency

Introduction

Blockchain technology can prove to be a game changer for companies in the process of
international business. Business partner relations and business transactions are coordinated
efficiently and effectively in using technology. The journey of blockchain technology and
cryptocurrencies started in the year 2008- the year of global financial crisis. While the world was
traumatized by financial turmoil, Satoshi Nakamoto published a white paper on blockchain
technology and cryptocurrencies. After ten years, the world is still trying to make sense of this
technology. Governments of Japan and China have taken a lead while India is yet to join the
bandwagon. In China local businesses are doing really good because they have lot of
cryptographers in China. Soon, China will be launching blockchain officially. On the other, Japan
is leading in regulation – in terms of legalising payment systems. This will stimulate the interest of
start-ups in Japan. Looking at the progressive journey of blockchain in India’s world counterparts,
and the government of India’s policies like Make in India and Digital India, there is tremendous
scope of blockchain technology. In fact, India’s position in blockchain is progressive with a lot of
Indian companies using Singapore as their base. Moreover, the blockchain industry is expected to
contribute in financial inclusion in India. However, the government of India has banned the trading
of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Bitcoin

Bitcoin is the most traded cryptocurrency with about 50% market share in terms of value in the
virtual currency market all over the world. In December, Bitcoin reached around $ 20,000 and had
slipped to around $ 6,000 in less than 2 months. Its high volatility, even higher than the most
volatile fiat currency, creates potential economic, financial, operational, legal, customer protection
and security related risks. Thus, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued advisories to financial
institutions and public that it has not given any license/authorization to any entity/company to
operate in cryptocurrency schemes or any Virtual Currencies such as Bitcoin. With this
introduction, Jagan Institute of Management Studies (JIMS) is organizing a seminar on Blockchain
and Cryptocurrency on 4th April 2018.
