Methodology

Study Design

As previously addressed, the purpose of the study is to prove that Dota

does not only bring negative effects to the people who play this game but it can also have

positive effects to them by knowing the effects of Dota competitive gaming from the

community. This study also aims to break the stereo type mindset that DOTA is just a

game where it mostly has many negative effects and help the people understand what the

gains that one acquire in playing the game. Based on the effects presented in the

literature, the study that was conducted qualitatively can be proven and would be

beneficial in regards to the people that have been playing this game for a long time.

Benefits include achievements obtained by the players while under the influence of this

game, passively convincing other people who have negative mindsets, and utilizing the

effects of the game to the community that is given by them.

The information that will be obtained from interviewing people who have been

earning money while playing this game can be used to fortify the existing data.

Sampling

The target population in this study is Dota players that have adequate experience

and has been playing for many years. The target population must also have been earning

money in playing Dota 2. The researchers have limited the target population from
professional players competing overseas to professional players that only stream and

compete in a Local Area Network. The research sampling method that will be used in this

study is purposive research to understand and determine the effects in playing Dota and

to explore more about the culture of the Dota players, and the mode of analysis in

gathering data is conducting an interview.

The researchers will send a letter of consent to the specific respondents along with

a sample copy of the questionnaire that will be used. The research design and results of

this study is based from the replies and answers from the respondents.

Data Collection and Instruments

The data collected will be based on interview in the reason of this study being

qualitative that is conducted with Dota players who have been streaming throughout the

game.

The instrument that will be used in this study will be located in Appendix A. The

first set of questions will be comprised of informative questions. In the reason of using

non-probability purposive sampling, the demographic information about the respondent

will be only asked personally and will not be purposely recorded as to also the anonymity

and privacy of the respondent. An interview guide will also be used (Appendix A). The

general outline of this interview will be structured around three basic questions: (1) How

often do you play Dota 2? ; (2) How much time do you spend on streaming while playing

Dota 2? ;(3) In your opinion, how does playing Dota 2 benefit to you in different

perspectives? Probing questions will follow up these questions.

Procedures

The data gathering will begin by first through the approval from the principal that

is under control of the proposed research, which is called data collection. The researchers

will start collecting data after the accord was proven and signed by the principal. The

researchers will create a letter of consent for the respondent for his/her approval and

availability as an interviewee and a sample survey questionnaire as a type and set of

questions for the respondent as a head start for the respondent to know the kinds of

questions that will be interrogated by the researchers. The letter and the sample survey

will be sent to the respondent through email in the reason of the researchers being

acquaintances to the respondents and the respondent’s confidentiality while being

involved in data collection.

The data collection will take place and will be held based on the agreement of the

respondent and the researchers’ decision in avoidance of the possible time conflicts that

can happen on both sides. In starting the interview, an initial consent form (Appendix B)

will be signed.

At the beginning of the interview, the interviewee will be asked a few questions

personally, and other information that can be implied to describe the respondent. The

name, address and other private information of the respondent will not be revealed for the

anonymity and confidentiality of the respondent. The researchers will rather use a

pseudonym as the name of the respondent. The interview will start with permission to

voice record the whole interview from the respondent. If the respondent agrees the
interview to be recorded, the recordings will be placed in the hidden files on a computer

when not in use and will be deleted entirely when the study was completed.

Protection of Human Subjects

As stated above, anonymity and confidentiality are predominant in this study, due

to the direct questioning to the respondent. Informed consent (Appendix C) will be given

to the respondent upon starting an interview. In the protection of the human subjects in

this study, the voice recordings that will be recorded will be kept by researchers through

the hidden files on the computer that can only be accessed by the researchers. When the

study was completed, the recordings will be deleted permanently.
