SEAKEEPING TEST (HEAVING AND PITCHING MOTION PREDICTION) ON

SEMISUBMERSIBLE/SPAR WITH/WITHOUT
OTHER SHIP FLOATING NEARBY.

OBJECTIVES:

1. To show the procedure on conducting a regular wave seakeeping tests for a

submersible/spar platform
2. To present the result of RAO (response amplitude operator) value at versus the wave
frequency.
3. To present the result of the Response Amplitude Operators for the semisubmersible/ spar
platform for head seas for both heaving and pitching motions.

INTRODUCTION:

A Seakeeping Test on a semisubmersible/spar platform with/without ship floating nearby will be

carried out in Universiti Teknologi Petronas Wave Tank. The general purpose of this test and lab
activities is to present the procedures and result of the seakeeping test using the
semisubmersible/spar platform model. The test will be carried out in test condition as shown in
table 1 below:

In accordance, this activity may contains several task which includes 2 types of report namely

i. Experimental Preparation (Group report)

ii. Full Model testing (Lab) Report (Individual full report)

Preparation report may include discussion on equipment’s used for the test, experimental
procedures on carry out the sea keeping, expected results, data analysis result, while individual
full report may focus only on sea keeping test which include some other topics like observation
during test, results and discussion, conclusion and references.

The discussion may also include answer for all questions listed below:
1. What can you conclude from this experimental calculation?

3
2. What is the physical relationship between wave length and wave frequency to the heave and pitch
response of the semisubmersible?
3. Discuss any error you observed during the experiments or the experiment data itself.
4. Using graphical integration, find the average of the one-third highest wave amplitudes and the
one-third highest, and one-tenth of heave and pitch amplitudes in Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum.
5. Is this submersible/spar platform is seaworthy in sea-state 7. Please give your comment.
