Blended Learning Lesson Plan

EDTC 610

Project Description: In this lesson students will investigate different habitats. Students will be
working in groups to identify the plants and animals that live in their specific habitat and how
they are able to survive. Students will make a Google Slides Presentation to share their
information with the rest of the class. Students will also write a fictional story to describe what
life would be like if they had to go live in that habitat and how they would adapt.

Rationale: The goal of this project is for students to get a better understanding of how plants and
animals survive in a specific habitat. This lesson gets built on later in the semester when students
create a habitat for a specific animal. Students will be using a Web Quest to research and get the
information they need in order to gain understanding of habitats.

Performance Based Assessment: After participating in research on the different habitats,

students will create a Google Slides presentation to share their findings with the class. Their
Google Slides presentation will include the plants and animals that live there, natural features,
and what about the habitat makes it a good home for the animals and plants that live there. Their
fictional story will also be a way to see if they can apply their understanding of animals relying
and adapting to their habitat.

Additional Assessment Ideas: Students can choose to use a different tool to present their
findings other than Google Slides. Students may also collaborate in groups to create their
presentation.

Final Products: Google Slides Presentation

Standards:
3.2.F.1 Explain that organisms can grow and survive in many very different habitats.

 Investigate a variety of familiar and unfamiliar habitats and describe how animals and
plants found there maintain their lives and survive to reproduce.
 Explain that organisms live in habitats that provide their basic needs. (food, water, air,
shelter)

ISTE Standard 1: Creativity and innovation

Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products
and processes using technology.
a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes
b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression

1
ISTE Standard 2: Communication and collaboration
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively,
including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.
a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital
environments and media.

ISTE Standard 3: Research and Information Fluency

Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.
a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry
b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of
sources and media
c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to
specific tasks.

Objectives: During this project, students will

o Research familiar and unfamiliar habitats
o Identify plants and animals that live in their habitat
o Describe how animals and plants survive in their habitat
o Collaborate with peers to create a Google Slides Presentation about habitats
o Create a fictional story about living in their habitat
Overall objective of lesson plan: Students will be able to describe how plants and animals in
familiar habitats rely on their habitat for basic needs.

Outline of Lesson Plan:

 Whole group: Teacher will discuss definition of a habitat/ show Discovery Education
video about habitats
 Teacher will assign groups a different habitat
 Teacher will go over the Web Quest on the Promethean Board
 Students will use the laptops to participate in the Web Quest in their groups
 Students will be able to participate in the Web Quest for a period of three days (Mon-
Wed)
 Students will use the information they have gathered in the Web Quest to create their
Google Slides presentation on Thursday-Friday.
 Students will present their Google Slides on Monday to the rest of the class.
 Students will work on their fictional story the rest of the week and present to class on
Friday.

Sample Guiding Questions:

 What do all living things need to survive?

 What is a habitat?
 What habitats are you familiar with?
 What natural features are in this habitat?

2
 What plants and animals live in this habitat?
 What specific characteristics make this a good home for these plants and animals?
 How did their habitat shape their development?

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated based the rubric. They will be graded on their
Google Slides presentation and fictional story.
