Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 GSM/EDGE Network Current Status and Requirement

Since the mid of 1980s, public mobile communications have witnessed three
generations of development with the further development of cellular networking
technologies and the emergence of high-capacity mobile telecommunications system.
The first generation is analog mobile telecommunications system, which only provides
speech services using FDMA technologies. The second generation is the digital
mobile telecommunications system, which appeared in 1990s with relevant standards
including GSM, IS-95, etc. This system is used for speech services mainly and
provides low speed circuit switched data services at the same time. At present, GSM
communications network is applied across the world, and more and more people
have recognized its big potential of development. In order to support data service,
GSM developed GPRS (the General Packet Radio Service) which operates in the
GSM band and allows the efficient use of the air interface by packet-oriented data
transfer rather than permanent channel occupation. Concatenation all of channels
results in potential peak data rates of more than 100kbps by GPRS. Now wireless
communication is heading towards mobile date at an quickly increasing pace, this is
the system of the Third Generation (3G): WCDMA and CDMA2000. But at the same
time, GSM standardization develop an other system-EDGE(The Enhanced Data
Rates for GSM Evolution),it is an upgrade of a GSM/GPRS infrastructure using the
same radio resources. Due to the advanced modulation schemes, a higher data rate-
about 480kbps can get under optimal radio conditions. So in the migration path from
2G to 3G, there will be EDGE/WCDMA and CDMA200, But WCDMA will provide the
future proof evolution for GSM system with GPRS and EDGE.

Up to now, we think that all operators are eager to build high quality communications
network in a short term. The market requirement for large capacity BTS is becoming
more and more urgent:
z BTS of larger capacity is required due to the fact that the number of mobile users
increases dramatically and the traffic intensity keeps rising.
z Higher multiplexing ratio at the Abis interface is required due to expensive
transmission resources.
z It is required to reduce the equipment room size for the purpose of cost reduction.
z Complicated transmission mode requires powerful BTS transmission adaptability
and multiple built-in transmission equipment.

1-1
Technical Manual - System Description
M900/M1800 BTS3X Series Base Transceiver Station Chapter 1 Introduction

z The continuous expansion of GSM system requires that BTS be expanded

flexibly and the existing investment be protected against waste during system
expansion.
z Service requirements of subscribers- keep increasing, which requires the BTS
support more services.
z Since the power supply system is unstable, power supply of BTS is required to
adapt to a wider range of voltage fluctuation and to have certain protection
mechanism which ensures fast BTS recovery after it is powered on again.
z BTS is required to provide better voice quality and faster switchover.
At same time, all operators hope that networks need to evolve to new capabilities as
smoothly as possible In the coming era of mobile multimedia services. Huawei also
consider that GSM Base Station must be updated in a minimum investment ways to
bring multimedia capability to existing networks quickly and keep the smooth
evolution toward future.

A series of macro cell GSM BTSs are developed by Huawei to meet the above
requirements, which provide a network solution to convenient maintenance, operation
and management to the client in densely populated areas and cities with large
capacity requirement.

Chapter 2 Characteristics

2.1 BTS3X Technological Characteristics

BTS3X series are designed as a typical all-in-one BTS by taking full consideration of
the requirements of capacity, configuration, installation, power supply, transmission,
and services. Its characteristics are as follows.

2.1.1 Integrated RF Component Technology

z Expansion based on the inheritance of the investment: BTS expansion can make
the utmost of all the antenna and feeder parts.
z Modular structure with good performance: RF combiner, divider and low noise
amplifier are integrated in CDU (Combining and Distribution Unit). All parts for
TRX processing including baseband processing, RF processing, power
amplification and power supply are all integrated in one TRX (Transceiver unit).
Modular structure can reduce internal cable connections, improve system
reliability and facilitate installation and maintenance. EDGE transceiver uses the
same modular structure as GSM normal transceiver.
z Intelligent CDU: Fine monitor and control function, excellent O&M, level 2
standing wave ratio alarm, low noise amplifier alarm, TTA (Tower Top Amplifier)
alarm, TTA power supply. Auto protection against emergency: Close
transmission power when transmit path antenna feeder is abnormal; power off to
bypass LNA (Low Noise Amplifier) when TTA is abnormal so as to ensure
normal system operation. Receive gain can be adjusted via remote control to
ensure the sensitivity of the receive system.

2.1.2 Mature RF Technology

z RF hopping and baseband frequency hopping are provided to improve system

anti-interference capability. It has good performance in practical application.
z Advanced digital RF technology is adopted to raise batch consistency,
manufacture scalability and stability of the RF system.

2.1.3 Advanced E-Abis Technology

topologies, e.g. SDH, E1, microwave, etc.

The E-Abis includes the following techniques:

2-1
Technical Manual - System Description
M900/M1800 BTS3X Series Base Transceiver Station Chapter 2 Characteristics

z APL (Advanced Phase Locking) technique solves the problem of clock jittery, by
using high-precision clock and characteristic software phase lock technique. The
problem such as SDH clock phase jittery is solved.
z With a tolerance of up to a bit error rate of 1E-4, i.e. 2 levels higher than the
common 1E-6 bit error rate, a better and smooth voice quality can be obtained
even in transmission through microwave.
z The system can tolerate a intermittent link failure of less than 2 seconds, which
makes the BTS30 more suitable for applications in unstable conditions such as
SDH transmission switching, microwave etc.
z The E-Abis use more efficient dynamic allotting algorithm to support EDGE.

2.1.4 Powerful O&M Functions

BTS3X can perform the following O&M functions: software downloading, BTS object
attribute configuration management, equipment management and running status
monitoring.
z Local end maintenance: provide man machine interface (MMI), and implement

z Configuration of TEU and TES can provide built-in optical transmission function,
while configuration of ABB can provide Abis bypass function. Since ABB
occupies the slot of TEU, only one of the above functions can be selected.
z Generally triplex TTA is adopted.
2) TEU is the generic term for boards realizing multiple optical transmission modes,
which includes boards ASU and PAT that provide 155M SDH and passive optical
transmission separately.
3) The system architecture of BTS3012A is similar to that of BTS30/312. They only
differ in common subsystem architecture. Figure 3-5 shows the common
subsystem logical architecture when ABB is adopted. BTS3012A can only
support configuration of one TMU, and it can adopt ABB, but does not support
configuration of TEU or TES.

4.3.2 Main Diversity Receiving

A radio channel is a random time-variable channel with fading features, while the
diversity receiving technology is an effective anti-fading technology. Radio signals that
are transmitted to RX through radio channels are combination of various multipath
components. These signals carry the same message and are featured with irrelevant

4-4
Technical Manual - System Description
M900/M1800 BTS3X Series Base Transceiver Station Chapter 4 Major Functions

random fading characteristics. By the diversity receiving technology these signals can
be combined into general receiving signals so as to diminish the impact caused by
fading.

The diversity receiving methods include frequency diversity, time diversity,

polarization diversity and space diversity. In BTS3001C, polarization diversity, space
diversity and frequency diversity are used to diminish the signal fading.

4.3.3 Hopping

Frequency hopping is an important method to improve the performance of a BTS. It

can not only improve the anti-fading capability of uplink and downlink channels, but
also improve the security in communications.

BTS3X can provide baseband frequency hopping and RF hopping. RF hopping

adopts dynamic loop bandwidth technology and Ping-Pong handover technology to
realize realtime switchover between two frequency synthesizers. When frequency
hopping is not performed, one channel of transceiver local oscillator is backup so as
to raise system reliability.

4.3.4 Power Control

When the distance between the MS and BTS3X changes, the BSC/BTS can adjust
the transmission power of BTS3X accordingly. Each level of power control adopts
APC (Automatic Power Control) technology to minimize the power error at each level.
When the timeslot is idle, since there is no downlink signal, the BSC will command
BTS3X to close the transmission power of the timeslot. Power control function can
raise the efficiency of transmitter and the reliability of power amplifier, and minimize
the interference of transmitter.

There are 10 BTS3X static power levels: level 0~9, descending with 2dB per level.
The maximum output power of BTS is level 0. For example, in the case the maximum
output power of BTS30 is 40W, level 0 corresponds to 46dBm, while level 9
corresponds to 28dBm.

BTS dynamic power control is fine-tune based on static power control. There are 15
BTS3X dynamic power control levels: level 0~15, in descending sequence, where
level 0 is the same as that of static power control level. If the "Current maximum
transmission power" is Pm, the range of dynamic power control is Pm~(Pm-30)dBm.
When dynamic power control reaches the maximum but still cannot meet the
requirement, the static power control should be adjusted so as to raise the maximum
output power of dynamic power control.

4-5
Technical Manual - System Description
M900/M1800 BTS3X Series Base Transceiver Station Chapter 4 Major Functions

4.3.5 Discontinuous Transmission

There are two transmission modes in the GSM system: One is the normal mode, in
which noise has the same transmission quality as voice; the other is discontinuous
transmission (DTX) mode, in which MS only sends the encoded background noise
that is called "comfortable noise". The utilization of DTX can meet the requirement for
system measurement and can make the called feel that the call is not disconnected.

BTS3X adopts Voice Activation Detection technology (VAD) to distinguish voice from
noise.

4-6
Technical Manual - System Description
M900/M1800 BTS3X Series Base Transceiver Station Chapter 5 Reliability Design

Chapter 5 Reliability Design

5.1 System Reliability Design

5.1.1 Rating design

Strict rating-lowering design is adopted for power and easily overheated devices to
make the electrical stress and temperature stress in practical utilization lower than the
set rating, hence postponing degradation of parameters and prolonging their life span.

5.1.2 Heat design

By parts selection, circuit and structure design and heat dissipation design, the impact
of temperature change on product performance is reduced and reliable operation of
the product in a wider temperature range is ensured.

5.1.3 EMC design

ElectroMagnetic compatibility (EMC) design prevents equipment from inhibited

degradation caused by electromagnetic transmission of other equipment in the same
electromagnetic environment. It also prevents other equipment, subsystems, systems
in the same electromagnetic environment from inhibited degradation caused by the
electromagnetic transmission of the equipment.

5.1.4 System fault monitoring and handling

The system can auto test and diagnose software and hardware fault, and report
alarms. It can record and output the fault records for print. It collects environment
conditions and report alarms when it detects problems. When TMU is faulty, the
system can test the major faults and report alarms while keeping the communication
between BTS and BSC.

5.1.5 System fault protection

Fault of any module will not lead to destructive fault of other modules and major faults
can be reported in time.

5-1
Technical Manual - System Description
M900/M1800 BTS3X Series Base Transceiver Station Chapter 5 Reliability Design

5.1.6 System maintainability design

Reasonable BTS internal cabling facilitates board replacement during fault handling.
Only cables of the faulty boards are disconnected. When replacing boards, main
boards can be plugged in or pulled out from the front of the cabinet.

Meanwhile, simple indicator flashing state helps to judge whether the equipment
operation is normal.

5.1.7 Running environment protection design

The system has input over-/under-voltage protection, output over-voltage protection,

output short-circuited, output overload and excess temperature protection for PSU
and transmission power. For DC input transmission power, it has input reverse
polarity protection to guarantee system safety.

5.2 Hardware Reliability Design

5.2.1 Board Coding Key Design

When a functional board is mistakenly inserted into the slot of functional board of
another kind, since coding key is adopted, the mistakenly inserted board cannot
normally contact with the backplane, hence protecting the equipment against being
damaged.

5.2.2 Power System Reliability Design

I. Continuous power supply design

For BTS using AC power supply, when external mains supply is powered off, outdoor
BTS can work for some time by using the storage battery equipped to keep the
operation of equipment during this time. And it will send mains supply power off alarm
signal to the BAM in the meantime, and handle the alarm basing on the actual
situation.

BTS3012A is built in with transmission power to provide -48V power for transmission
equipment. To improve reliability, 1+1 backup working mode may be adopted for the
transmission power. When one of the modules is faulty, it will automatically exit the
power supply system, while another module will provide output to all -48V load and
send module faulty alarm information to the BAM.

5-2
Technical Manual - System Description
M900/M1800 BTS3X Series Base Transceiver Station Chapter 5 Reliability Design

II. Distributed power supply design

Distributed power supply for load is adopted inside the system. The key power supply
path, AC/DC part, adopts N+1 backup working mode. If one of the modules in AC/DC
part is faulty, alarm information can be sent to the BAM, and onsite hot swappable
replacement is supported.

5.2.3 Abis Communication Bypass Design

When BTS is in chain networking environment and its power fails, the Abis
transmission bypass board in the BTS can bypass the transmission line of TMU board
internally, hence avoiding long-time service disruption of all the sites under this BTS.

5.3 Software Reliability Design

I. Scheduled check of key resources

For software resources in the system, the long-time occupation verifying mechanism
is applied among the modules. In case of resource unavailable due to software
exception, the verifying mechanism can ensure the release of unavailable resources
and the output of various logs and alarms.

II. Fault isolation feature

Software design has module fault isolation function. The error in some software
module will be restricted in the module only and will not lead to fault of other software
module. Software has fault tolerant and error correction capability. Minor software
running exception will not cause system restart or reset.

III. Data check

z Consistency check of user input data guarantees the correctness of reference

relation among the data.
z When the system detects data modification failure in some stage, it will restore
the related data to initial state to ensure data consistency.

IV. Process monitoring

In software operations, output channels are provided for software internal errors and
part of hardware errors, which are called process monitoring mechanism. This
mechanism can monitor the running state of tasks, handle system abnormalities and
report to the external devices.

6.1.2 Local Maintenance

Local maintenance refers to the maintenance mode in which PCs are connected to
BTS by serial port cables and implement maintenance operations to the BTS, as
shown in Figure 6-1.

The local maintenance console can only be accessed after the local maintenance
software is installed in PCs. The BTS local maintenance is carried out based on
different logical objects of the BTS, which include site, cell, carrier, and baseband.
Direct operations can also be performed on boards. Real-time alarm messages can
be obtained at the same time.

6.1.3 Remote Maintenance

Remote maintenance is performed through OMC. PCs are connected to BSC via
OMC network and are connected subsequently to BTS via the Abis interface, as
shown in Figure 6-1.

6-1
Technical Manual - System Description
M900/M1800 BTS3X Series Base Transceiver Station Chapter 6 O&M System

The remote maintenance console can only be accessed via OMC Shell of the
workstation (WS). The user interface of the BTS remote maintenance system is in
topological structure, where names, categories, locations, numbers, equipment types
and running states (normal, alarm, etc.) of all NEs in the mobile network can be
browsed. The user can specify a NE to be maintained and check detailed
performance data, alarm data and configuration data. He can also implement O&M to
certain type of NEs through the topological map.

6.2 O&M Functions

BTS3X O&M system provides the user with powerful O&M functions in consideration
of the user’s requirements in equipment performance and maintenance. These
include security management, alarm management, maintenance management,
performance measurement and test, etc.

6.2.1 Security Management

In view of various remote maintenance operations implemented by the O&M system,

the system provides powerful security management system to execute O&M control
over the equipment in order to avoid unauthorized operations which may affect
normal performance of the equipment.

The user must log in and go through authentication before performing O&M to BTS.
The system provides an authorization system with multiple levels to ensure that only
authorized users can execute relevant commands for O&M. Meanwhile, dialog boxes
are prompted before any important O&M command is executed to get confirmation for
the potential problems due to the operations.

6.2.2 Alarm Management

BTS O&M system provides highlighted alarm windows and powerful real-time alarm
management functions, such as collection, clearing, query, processing, saving,
explanation, prompting, shielding, filtering, acknowledging, analyzing, etc. Besides, it
also provides on-line help information system and stage filtering system to help the
user quickly locate faults. It also provides alarm recovery methods.

6.2.3 Maintenance Management

The operation & maintenance center (OMC) implements management over the whole
BSS through BSC. BTS can perform check and location functions for internal errors
so that BSC can implement maintenance to it without knowing the internal structure of
each BTS.

6-2
Technical Manual - System Description
M900/M1800 BTS3X Series Base Transceiver Station Chapter 6 O&M System

The O&M system can monitor and query the states of boards and the system,
keeping the user aware of the system running states. It supports automatic backup of
data with backup time intervals. It also supports reset of key parts and activation of
software.

6.2.4 Performance Measurement and Test

The O&M system can implement performance measurement and test to the entities
so as to collect BTS running states data and perform accurate analysis on the running
states.
