MUSCLE TESTING LAB 2

Please make sure you are familiar with the following terms:

• Weakness: This will be a graded using the grading system discussed in the intro lab 5-0

• Shortness: A mild to moderate shortening of the muscle with a mild to moderate loss of the
range of motion of the joint

• Contracture: A marked degree of shortness of the muscle with a marked loss of the range of
motion of the joint

• Substitution: The use of Synergistic muscles instead of the prime mover, a common error and
often missed

• Hypotonicity: Decreased ability to activate a muscle

• Hypertonicity: Increased activity within a muscle with a decreased ability to relax the muscle

For this lab please know Rhomboids, Latissimus Dorsi and all three divisions of the Trapezius.

Work through pages 52-55 of The Anatomy Coloring Book by Kapit and Elson to help with this.

You need to know the following for each of these muscles:

• Origin & Insertion

• Nerve Supply

• Action

We will then cover the muscle tests for these in the lab.
