Principal’s Foreword

It gives me great pleasure to pen this message for the Dunman High
School Guitar Ensemble (DHSGE) Concert 2018. The DHSGE has come a
long way since their inception in 2007 and in these 11 years, the
successes and challenges that they have faced together have bound
them as a family united in their journey to music excellence.

To the members of DHSGE, as we celebrate your 11th anniversary this

evening, I hope that you will remember the past 10 years of togetherness,
120 months of music making, 522 weeks of practices, 87,672 hours of
fun and laughter, and more than 300 million seconds of growing your
passion and building your character that enable you to get here this
evening. As long as you continue working hard, staying focused and
doing your best to pursue a common goal, you will continue to be the
standard bearer for your consistent high standard and excellence in
performance.

The DHSGE has chosen the theme Otra Vez, Spanish for ‘once again’ for
this evening’s concert. Otra Vez tells the story of how two different
individuals cross paths once, become friends, separate, then reunite once
again in the future. In the same way, the DHSGE family come together to
give and learn from each other with each one of them having different
personalities and different working styles.

It is this unquestioning commitment to one another that best shows

DHSGE has come of age and grown into a true family. May you continue
to work together in the many years to come.

Mr Low Teck Eng Tony

Principal of Dunman High School

Introduction of Our Conductor

Mr Kevin Yeo has been with DHSGE since its founding back in in 2007.
Being the resident conductor, Mr Yeo has led DHSGE to attain admirable
achievements over the years, such as clinching the highest accolade for
Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) competitions participated in.

With more than 20 years of experience and a Diploma in Guitar Principles

of Instrumental Teaching from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools
of Music, Mr Yeo has guided the ensemble to relentlessly enhance itself
while cultivating the students’ passion for the instrument.

Mr Yeo takes on innovative approaches to expose the ensemble to

different styles and genres of music, introducing and teaching new
playing techniques through songs. Giving students the opportunity to
share their opinions and provide feedback, he has fostered strong bonds
and created a fun and positive learning environment for the ensemble.
This has further encouraged DHSGE to strive for excellence in practising
and ultimately, performing on stage.

Mr Yeo has worked alongside the student committee in preparations for

the concert, facilitating practice sessions and having discussions to
constantly seek improvements in the ensemble. Under his guidance, the
ensemble has managed to come a long way to present itself with utmost
pride and honour today.

DHSGE would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for
the continuous support by Mr Yeo throughout the journey and hopes to
carry on pushing boundaries to scale even greater heights in the future!
Brief History of DHSGE

Formerly known as the “Guitar Club”, Dunman High School Guitar

Ensemble (DHSGE) was founded in 2007 as a humble
establishment, consisting of just 19 students from the pioneer
batch of the Integrated Programme. DHSGE shocked the local
Guitar Ensemble scene during its debut in the Singapore Youth
Festival (SYF) by being the only Guitar Ensemble conferred with the
award of Gold with Honours that year, establishing itself as one of
the leading guitar ensembles in Singapore.

The ensemble, known for both its expression and diversity in

music, has consistently carried on achieving exceptional results,
clinching Gold with Honours yet again in the SYF of 2011, and
subsequently being awarded two Certificates of Distinction in 2013
and 2015, following the change in the grading system.

DHSGE strives to provide a fun yet enriching platform for a fun yet
enriching platform for amateur guitarists to develop their musical
potential. Priding itself on the versatility of the guitar, DHSGE
performs a wide range of pieces, from self-arranged modern pop
songs to movie themes to classical pieces at various events,
including its Timepiece concert series, overseas exchanges to
countries like South Korea and Taiwan, as well as at various niche
performances for charity. With its past achievements, members of
DHSGE are committed to continue to preserve the legacy of the
ensemble as we step into our 11th running year.

hatched in rivers and carried downstream into the ocean
where they grow, before returning to the rivers to
produce their offspring, beginning yet another cycle of
the march.
