This paper presents a ?nite element model highlightingthe behaviour of bonded post-
tensioned one-wayspanning concrete slabs in ?re conditions. The modelwas veri?ed
against ten ?re tests on bonded post-tensioned concrete slabs at ambient and
elevatedtemperatures. The slabs were simply supported andpost-tensioned with 15.7
mm nominal diameter seven-wire mono-strand tendons. The mechanical and
thermalmaterial non-linearities of the entire slabs components, consisting of the
concrete, plastic and galvanised steelducts, prestressing tendon and the
anchorages, havebeen carefully inserted into the model. The interfacebetween the
tendon and surrounding grout was alsoconsidered, allowing the bond behaviour to be
modelledand the tendon to retain its pro?le shape during thedeformation of the
slab. The temperature distributionsthroughout the slab, together with the
slabsdevelopment of displacement and stress, as it washeated, were predicted by
the model and veri?ed againsttest data. A parametric study was conducted
toinvestigate the effects on the global structural behaviour owing to the change in
the aggregate type, duct type, load ratio, boundary conditions and different ?
rescenarios. The study has shown that the bonded post-tensioned concrete slabs
investigated in this study arecapable of achieving the designed 90 min ?re
resistance. It is also shown that the ?re resistance given by BS8110-2 and BS EN
1992-1-2 are acceptable for the designof bonded post-tensioned one-way spanning
concreteslabs under ?re conditions.NOTATION

1. INTRODUCTION
Post-tensioned ?oor slabs can be bonded or unbonded. For bonded post-tensioned ?oor
slabs the transfer of the force fromthe tendon to the concrete is by way of the end
anchors, thebond between the tendons and concrete which is maintainedby grouting
and the curvature of the tendons. For unbondedsystems the transfer of force from
the tendon to the concrete isonly by way of the end anchors and the tendons
curvature. Todate, there has been no detailed information regarding thestructural
behaviour of bonded post-tensioned concrete slabsunder ?re conditions with only a
few ?re tests, recently conducted by Bailey and Ellobod y

provide guidance on the ?re resistance of post-tensioned ?oor slabs, but these have
been derived basedon tests carried out on pre-tensioned and non-tensionedconcrete
members. In terms of post-tensioned construction thelimited previous ?re tests were
only conducted on unbondedpost-tensioned slabs as reported in references [57].
Anextensive review of these tests, together with evidence of ?resin actual
buildings constructed using post-tensioned ?oor slabs, was provided by Lee and
Bailey

who concluded thatfurther investigation into the behaviour of post-tensioned ?oor
slabs in ?re is required. This conclusion, of the need for further investigation,
is also shared by the latest FederationInternationale de la Precontrainte (FIB)
design guide on post-tensioned slabs.

The existing limited test data on unbondedslabs were augmented by Bailey and
Ellobody ,

where theeffect of different aggregate type and restraint conditions
washighlighted.Recently, Bailey and Ellobod y
